... and, because you've already settled up and bought your new shiny with your recent payoff and still have credits left over, you saunter into the gift shop just to browse.
What catches your eye enough you would spend a few of those destined-for-the-local-"fun"-spot credits?
In other words, what could be found in a high-tech gift shop?
Aside: Why doesn't the subsidized liner have a gift shop? You have these paying prisoners, er, passengers, to be tempted for over a week by the lure of shiny trinkets.
You see the blazing lights of the starport gift shop...

Holographic images of the sites.

A cute little toy or touristy memento for one's significant other.
Some last-minute snacks for the shuttle (especially those horribly unhealthy bars/cookies/candy/drinks you just can't find anywhere else in the next five minutes.
The replacement filter or LS mask you need for the local atmosphere that you left back on your bunk in the ship.
Mirror shades. 'Cause they're cool.
Personal grooming and cosmetics - because you saw yourself in the mirror when you walked in.
Personal grooming and body-care supplies - because you saw the look on the clerk's face when you walked in.
A charger compatible with the local electrical grid - because the natives decided to go with 75 Hz/185 V service for reasons known only to the Ancients.
A minor item of clothing - because you left your hat/gloves/scarf/whatever back on your bunk. Alternatively, because the ship's cat was mad at you during your trip and ate it.
A pet toy - so your ship's cat won't be mad at you (for at least an hour or two) when you return.

Space is at a premium onboard ship. Not to worry, the stewardess has a cart...GamingGlen wrote: ↑ Aside: Why doesn't the subsidized liner have a gift shop? You have these paying prisoners, er, passengers, to be tempted for over a week by the lure of shiny trinkets.

The Einstein Cypher, by Don Mauve.

The download keys or media for a digital friend/expert that looked and spoke as a local (or various locals) talking about history, "important" people, great places to spend your credits, local urban legends, and so on.
I am imagining the digital version of every ghost tour, local walk, pub crawl, and welcome speech I've ever seen. I'm not sure I'd pay 1750 for that, but I'd pay less for some sort of overlay of the digital friend / expert I already had.

Along those lines - temp subscription to the local dating app. (Or - maybe an app resident at any Class A or B starport?)
Mid- to low-tech worlds could have a bulletin board or similar for jobs, services, etc.

On the back wall, there is a wall of vid-screens hawking the latest advertising for the selection of Novels to be immediately
downloaded to a travelers' PAD, before liftoff. There is a trio of travelers watching the advertising, the Human male is
watching an ad for the latest Toveev Clance novel of a future war in the Marches with the book following the
exploits of the Imperial Household Cavalry Division(the Emperor's Hammer), in a future invasion of the Sword Worlds.
The Human female is looking at two ads for the latest Romance Novels, one's cover image is of a Shirtless Sector Duke
sweeping a Noblewoman in his arms in a passionate embrace.. called "The Sector Duke's Concubine". The other romance
novel ad holding her attention is a scantily clad human female dressed in the rags of a fashionable dress, cringing in
terror of a gaudy dressed Vargr Corsair about to ravish her, in a metal cell, called "Prisoner of the Korezrufh Corsairs". Her Vargr female friend standing next to her is holding her tongue, but rolling her eyes at her friend and her interest in that novel's cover image.
