What do your PCs look like?

Postby Old School » Sun Feb 16, 2020 5:50 pm

Do any of you put effort into the appearances of your travellers? My players recently had a (lighthearted) argument over what they looked like, so i encouraged them to find representative images of their characters. Pinterest is a decent repository of concept art.

After one player tried to convince us that Junior Sanchez from my Drinax campaign looked like Amos Burton, which was universally rejected by the rest of us, they started sending images of how they thought the other PCs looked. Captain Janeway, Kaylee Frye, Adam Jenson (Duex Ex) and Of course Amos (TV version) have all appeared. I’ll try to organize the top choices and post them soon.

Anyone else do anything similar?

I use character art from Pinterest. Not famous actors.

We all tend to start off with archetypes.

New computer graphic programmes will allow increased customization, if you want to put in that effort.

I rather like the Heroforge page, if you've seen that.

https://www.heroforge.com/

Has the advantage that you can actually get a 3d sculpt of the character you design, and there's enough generic space armour, clothing and weapons to produce most characters.
Understand that I'm not advocating violence.
I'm just saying that it's highly effective and I strongly recommend using it.

When I created a player character for an upcoming Pirates of Drinax, I used the image from the GDW Alien Module 1: Aslan cover. Shortly after I rendered a Heroforge mini that had the right image.

I'll sometimes ask who plays your character in the movie version of our campaign. I like it when they come up with more obscure answers than "Brad Pitt."

I hadn’t seen that before. I can see how you could lose a lot of time designing with that. Pretty cool.

So we had the players search not just for an image of their PC, but also the three other PCs in our latest adventure so we could compare. The names across the top are the PC making the choice, the vertical names are who is pictured. So self portraits run from top left to bottom right.

I think a few feelings got hurt in this one. :D

Chad - retired Army Colonel, married to Alaina, age 40ish
Alaina - retired navy Captain, married to Chad, and overall den mother, age 40ish
Gemma - former navy Engineer, wiseass, early 30s
Junior - former Army Sgt., troublemaker who fancies himself a badass.

I don't know what you're talking about. Obviously I have never wasted an entire afternoon trying to get NPC images just right and then realised I haven't actually done the rest of the prep for that evening's session.
That would be foolish.
