While we’re talking hull types, is there ever a reason to choose a standard hull over the close structure configuration? Close structure has more hull points and lower cost.

Not that I can see. Standard configuration isn't even directly connected to any specific hull shape...

Like a lot of things in this game, hull configuration is more of an abstraction.

Having said that, like dispersed structure requires more percentage per armour factor, spheres should need less.

I assumed the Standard configuration is used as a catch all for some iconic ships of earlier editions that couldn't be pigeon holed to other shapes.

Sphere should require bigger landing feet but we night be straying into silly land.

Remember one thing, the ship isn't restricted to exactly a sphere. That is the general primary shape. The structure can have extensions to the shape for function. The broadsword is an example how you can land a sphere without it rolling away.

Presumably, within a confined diameter.

All you really need is a landing platform that looks like a golf tee.... :D
