Naval Adventure 2: Showing the Sunburst - Ebook & Pre-Order!

Postby msprange » Fri May 17, 2019 9:25 am

A brand new Naval Adventure has just been released for Traveller, using the Naval Campaigns Handbook from the Element Cruisers box set to bring another 'bridge crew' game to your group - Naval Adventure 2:Showing the Sunburst has arrived!

You can grab your own copy here: https://www.mongoosepublishing.com/nava ... burst.html

Taking command of a warship assigned to the troubled Jewell-Vilis naval station, the Travellers are sent on what looks like a simple flag-showing mission. All they have to do is visit a few worlds, remind friend and foe alike that the navy is around, and give assistance to Imperial diplomats operating in the region. There is, however, a sealed section in their orders – to be opened after their ship leaves port.

Ordered to quietly locate misappropriated Imperial ships, the Travellers are immediately plunged into the murky politics of the region. They must find the vessels without appearing to look for them, and make a decision when they succeed. Should they deprive pro-Imperial factions of their means of self-defence? Should they look closely at how the ships were obtained? And what of the situation on Arden? An officer from a foreign power faces trial and execution there. Is it in the interests of the Imperium to support the process, or to obstruct it? Weighty decisions are made under the sunburst banner, and a mistake could move a tense situation another step towards war.

Yay! This sounds exactly like the kind of adventure I’d like to run!

Is the Vargr on the cover the captain of the ship? I’m asking because the uniform style and colour are different from what we’ve previously seen, so it could hint at another type of uniform plus color-coding uniforms being a thing in the imperial navy (hinted at in artwork throughout the Element box)

Ah, of course!

Were you perchance inspired by the Orville when choosing uniform colors? They had purple admirals and blue command uniforms too. Looks like the IN has green engineers (or possibly tech) though (from Element)...

That purple jacket looks less fancy or ornate than the blue uniforms in the same picture (uncluttered is perhaps a good word for it?) so I’m gonna assume that it’s an optional uniform detail for outdoor use (I.e. a jacket) rather than a separate tier of uniform, sound about right?

Orville not the inspiration (at least, I do not think so!).

We are going to be diving into uniforms and related things in a big way next year. Something to wait for in the State of the Mongoose...

Are the humans military crew? If that's an inspection, they look a little undisciplined and not very "parade-ground pose" to me. If it's not then I don't know what's happening. But I was never in anyone's navy so what do I know?

edit: Also an unrealistically gigantic chest but it's kind of OK for fantasy and scifi art and I guess it's technically possible :-)

Isn't that actually the ambassador to Arden rather than an admiral? There's no such admiral in the adventure but it matches the ambassador's description perfectly.

If it's an ambassador, that might explain why the navy crew are not doing that inspection thing.

That’s great to hear!

While I haven’t had the opportunity to play any naval adventures yet, I do enjoy reading them and I like the different tone and arrangement compared to “normal adventures” - each being basically a multi-session campaign spanning over several months of game-time.

Lots of freedom for the players, but also a central theme to keep them more or less pointing in the right direction - and I gotta say, they idea to let loose a group of children aboard a cruiser... brought an evil grin to my face :)

Just imagine the chaos! Must be worse than fighting off teleporting Zhodani commandos, and a perfect opportunity to use the Element deck plans :)

Interesting to note how the various non-combat skills have been given much importance, a captain sure needs to be just as good diplomat and negotiator/persuader as tactician!

I also believe I’ve spotted another type of uniform, the one on p.12 is either a jacket in the same style as the shirt seen on the cover, or just not worn tucked in as on every other picture... also, lots of reference pics for the shipboard working dress.

All in all, a good adventure!

We are very keen on these Naval Adventures, and very much want to promote them as a strong campaign option for Traveller. Expect to see a lot of support over the next few years!

That is wonderful news!

Fitting considering the upcoming frontier war too... ;)

And perhaps, somewhere down the line, additional in-depth books & deckplans for other ships..? :)

(Considering how amazing the Element box turned out, I’d gladly see more ^^)
