Are they too ambitious?

Postby JMISBEST » Thu Dec 27, 2018 7:02 pm

A friend I've not seen in almost 21 years has got back in touch, he's also A Traveller GM, he's planning something that even I think is too ambitious and he and I want advise on how he can handle his ambitious plan

He's thinking of running with just him as GM and A Player with A Single Character commanding Pcs

The player rolled up A Noble Character with A Portfolio that uses a hybrid of 1st and 2nd edition worth Cr 60,000,000 that nets him Cr 412,500 per month and thanks to 4 Ship Benefit Rolls on A Table he designed for a laugh that netted A 25% twice +2D3+2% or 57% ownership in A Ship of his choice that he took as A 1.000 ton version of The 800 Ton Mercenary Cruiser and when it comes to The Ships Loan will be able to pay of at least Cr 86,798 per month and at least Cr 1,093,576 per year

He plans to run The Ship as A part-time Freelance Pirate Hunter, part-time freelance Subsector Navy and part-time Mercenary Platoon operation with a platoon of 12 Marines, 5 of both Starship and Planetary Vehicle Type Gunners, 2 Medics, 1 of both Ship and Planetary Vehicle type Engineers, 1 of both Ship and Planetary Vehicle type Mechanics, 1 of both Starship and Planetary Aircraft Pilots, 1 of both Starship and Planetary Fighter type Mechanics and 1 of both Starship and Planetary type Fighter Pilots

They all get a minimum of Cr 8,400 per month or a minimum of Cr 8,400x34 or Cr 285,600. They all with at least fairly advanced level of self-defence training, with a guaranteed bonus when he can afford it and all with A +3 DM in their 5 key-skills and A +2 DM in their 3 none-key skills

Also would a insurance company lend him the money for A Cr 913,500,000 Ship when he can afford A 57% ownership upfront, land, property, investments and antique Artwork worth another Cr 70,000,000 as collateral and a minimum payment of at least Cr 86,798 per month and at least Cr 1,093,576 per year

If a player is making 412,500 a month with only a ship mortgage of ~87k, whats his motivation for adventuring? He clearly is out earning his expenditure

That Cr 87,000 something is not the mortgage. Its the minimum he can put towards paying off the loan a month. With the other figure being the minimum he can pay off of the loan per year

Said this before but...

In 30+ years of gaming I've not met anyone who plays like you do.

Yet you know several other groups who all play that way too.

And now someone you've not met in21 years ALSO plays that way, down to making up tables you can have the Luckiest Role Ever on and end up so rich there's no point in being an adventurer.

There is more to this game than nobles and portfolios. Seriously. Just create some ordinary characters and go have adventures. It's better. Trust me.

Stop creating custom table that give the players everything on a plate.

To me Traveller is ducking and diving, always being on the back foot and trying to stay one step ahead of the authorities.
Too much money just leads to Accountant in Space with no real roleplaying aspects to the game.
