Did she do the right thing?

Postby JMISBEST » Fri Oct 26, 2018 9:56 am

A GM I know decided to use The Portfolio Events Table to make 2 rolls and they where as follows.

The 1st was A 11 then A 5, which should increased all portfolio items value by +50%, the 2nd was A 3 then another 3, which should have lowered all portfolio items value by -30% but she decided to be merciful and ruled that they cancelled each other out and still increased all portfolio items value by +1D3x5% or by +5%. But what I want to know is did she do the right thing? or was she too merciful?

A 50% increase followed by a 30% decrease would reult in a net 5% gain. That’s not a ruling, that’s mathematics. Nothing merciful about accurate math.

Sorry me and her are bad at maths and she made a ruling that could have netted her players a 15% increase rather then a 5% increase but which actually resulted in the increase their it should have been

You seem to be obsessed with that table.

Traveller is about people doing stuff, not watching your stock portfolio grow.

Although I see no joy in table and dice driven Monty Haul, if that particular community of players enjoy it that way, that's their business. But questions about how to play in a way that no one else plays are not a good fit for a community where people follow the customary role-playing model.

I rolled up a Nobility: Dilettante Scoundrel (7 terms) who has:

Yacht, Yacht, Stocks Portfolio: Cr1000000, Stipend Portfolio: Cr10000000, Yacht, Yacht, Yacht, Estate Portfolio: Cr750000, and 2 Ship Shares.

But I prefer when characters roll up having a drug addiction instead.

if you're going to roll on these tables, you need to accept the outcome.

This sort of 'being merciful' is one reason for the incredible levels of campaign bloat you experience.

Do you 'mercifully' reduce super-incredible best rolls ever, or do your players get to reap the rewards of their amazing luck?

If you cancel out bad luck on the tables then basically you're just shovelling money at the Travellers.
