Has the Traveller timeline ever advanced?

Postby Tom Kalbfus » Tue Jul 31, 2018 10:11 pm

I noticed that after the New Era and shortly thereafter the timeline has retreated to 1104 or thereabouts and stayed there. Why do you suppose that is? Why does the Forgotten Realms timeline advance but the Traveller timeline stays frozen in place, and has been that way for the last 40 years or so? I guess when GDW was still selling traveler products they advanced the timeline, but ever since, it has been stuck in the early 1100s. Why is this?

they have rewound things back from the canon future history if a civil war and Virus outbreak. (The New Era setting,)

Your campaign has 10 years from 1105 to 1115 before the Empire goes up in flames according to future history.

From what Matthew has posted in the past, they do intend to revisit the Fifth Frontier War eventually so that would advance the timeline. Not sure if they ever intend to repeat the Rebellion.

He has also posted that they’re more interested in enhancing the setting than advancing it chronologically.
"Spacers lead a sedentary life. They live at home, and their home is always with them—their starship, and so is their country—the depths of space."

There’s an edition of The New Era by our own MJ Dougherty that gets us to the Fouth Imperium in 1248.

Traveller5 jumps ahead from there to the Galaxiad of the 1900’s.

The GURPS timeline moves beyond 1115 without the Rebellion, Hard Times or Virus.

Quite a bit of material beyond the 1105 Golden Era.

We have been talking about this a lot behind the scenes - going beyond the FFW and up to when the Empress Wave hits important things.

The one problem we have is that Traveller does not only cover a huge amount of time but also space - we could spend the rest of our lives detailing Charted Space in 1105 alone and still not cover everything. We have looked at a 'rolling' timeline but I don't think that would work for pen and paper RPGs. At the current time, we are looking at diving into the FFW in a big way (books like Behind the Claw are building the foundation for that), and looking at the galaxy further in the future perhaps with mega-campaigns like the Pirates of Drinax.

However, we have quite a few projects ongoing for Traveller right now, so this advanced timeline is likely to appear in 2020 at the earliest.

You know I thought the New Era was an interesting setting, and as they say, no empire lasts forever, not even one that lasted for 1100 years.
