Ready Player One Query?

Postby Hopeless » Wed Jun 27, 2018 3:26 pm

Has anyone tried running their own version of Ready Player One?

This might be tough to play in Traveller. Cyberspace is something that Traveller tended to ignore.

Shadowrun might be a better gaming system or Mindjammer?

You can run it with Traveller mechanics and add reference points so the PCs know it's an artificial universe. Haven't seen more than a commercial for the movie so I don't know how 'realistic' it's supposed to be.

Depends on how close you follow the Spielberg vision.

I'd say losing all your coin zeroes out your character in the Oasis.

Been wondering about this.

Eventually a wave of generation ships are sent out from Earth they start off colonising the rest of the solar system establishing bases where possible in preparation for the next advance.

Eventually this involves leaving the solar system for another star system but dependant on a crew that needs to be replaced every so often in case the "colony" can't cover all of the positions needed to keep the ship operational.

The slumbering passengers/crew are linked into a VR-like world where they can live their lives preparing for their eventual awakening so multiple artifical enviornments are developed to cover all potential training let alone advances the result of the active crew and the ship's sensors and their exploration of the space they're passing through.

Could start off with the players experiencing what we recognise today as normal life then all of a sudden called upon to complete a mission then discover they wake up aboard a generation ship over a thousand light years away from earth to help repair an essential ship system. even explore a potential new home or potential new resource whether fuel, materials or building a waystation for the next generation ship to make use of?

Imagine instead of Sword Art Online we see the Matrix modern day one moment then wake up to a Mass Effect Andromeda situation except you're still en route, would that be an interesting opening to a game?

I saw Ready Player One. Not a bad movie. As for VR. Imagine a starship carrying an entire virtual Earth. Everything is normal on this virtual Earth, the simulation is of Earth in the past, humans are stuck on Earth or seem to be within the simulation, and suddenly the simulation ends when the ship arrives in system, maybe sometime after a planet has been terraformed, and humans are downloaded from the ship's computer.

Here is my first map of the Oasis, Sector 2, also called "NASA's Solar System Orrery" NASA bought the right to develop this sector, to create a virtual reality simulation of the Solar System. This sector consists of a single region where both magic and technology work. the Earth is presented in its natural state, without cities, roads or buildings. The ecliptic is all located 5 light hours from the top of each subsector, at about the halfway point from top to bottom of the entire sector. Above and below that are comets and asteroids, not much of anything.

There are 27 cubic sectors in total. Each sector is 10 light hours across, which is the approximate diameter of our Solar System, if you count Neptune as the outermost planet. The overall shape of the Oasis is a Cube 3 sectors on a side or 30 light hours on an edge. The unit of currency of Oasis is the credit, which for the purpose of this setting I would set equal to the Traveller credit Each sector can hold 1000 worlds, a subsector is large enough to hold the orbits of Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars plus the inner half of the asteroid belt. So if we have a Sector dedicated to the Traveller RPG, then it could hold 1000 Traveller mainworlds, if we want nearest gas giant refueling, then 8 subsectors can hold a system which goes out to the nearest gas giant in most cases. We usually aren't interested in the outer systems, just in the mainworld and the nearest source of fuel for the starship. If we use 8 subsectors for each mainworld to include the gas giant, then we can have 125 mainworlds per sector. So maybe I'll have a sector dedicated to the Solomani Rim perhaps, and relocate mainworld to conform with the 2300 near star map. The main difference is that these worlds would be 2 light hours apart, one can use a maneuver drive to travel from one to another, The Jump Drive will get you instantaneously to light speed, in other words you would travel 1 light hour per hour. This is a little bit different from the Traveller setting, but this is actually the Oasis from Ready Player One simulating the Traveller setting in one of its sectors. Another sector will be a Star Wars setting, and in there, we tray to pack in all the Star Wars planets from the movies or novels or at least as many as will fit in there. Another sector will have the Star Trek Universe, with a bunch of Star Trek planets including the Federation the Klingon and Romulan Empires and so forth. Traveller starships can travel to the Star Wars Sector and Star Wars starships can travel to the Traveller sector and to other places. There is also a few Dungeons & Dragons Sectors, travel through those is accomplished through Spelljamming.

Sector 3 is the Traveller RPG sector. In this sector are some worlds from the Solomani Rim setting, each system is truncated, with most being one subsector across (1 light hour) with just enough room for the habitable zone where the Mainworld orbits, and for a gas giant if the system is supposed to have one. The NPCs have recently been upgraded with true AI software, and the characters have fake memories of their prior lives in the fictional Solomani Rim, they woke up one day to find that the systems have been rearranged, their Jump Drives are now light speed drives, which still require their ships to be more than 100 diameters from a planet before it would activate. In turns out the simulation continues even when it is closed to player characters on Tuesdays and Thurdays, but it turns out every other day of the week the NPCs are visited by all sorts of Avatars some with magic powers some with equipment the NPCs never heard of. Each square is 1 light hour on a side, and it turns out the NPCS can travel to the neighboring systems and even outside of their sector with their ship's maneuver drive. Most NPCs can't explain why they avatars can suddenly appear and disappear without warning. It seems to them that their Universe has gone crazy!
The Avatars like to shoot em up with seemingly almost total disregard for their own self-preservation. Some of the Avatars when killed, reappear sometime later without their equipment. The NPCs also can't explain why whenever someone gets killed they turn into a pile of gold pieces. The Universe is not making a lot of sense to them.
Just having a lot of fun with this.
