What's to stop them?

Postby JMISBEST » Tue Jun 26, 2018 2:11 pm

I'm wondering something

If in Pirates of Drinax A Social Scale 15 player whose characters a noble rolls A 12+3 or 15 on A 2nd edition version of The Portfolio Table which nets him or her A Cr 50,000,000 Estate that earns him or her Cr 250,000 per month what's to stop him or her selling it, using Cr 26,000,000 to fully repair The Harrier, give it A Triple Turret with 2 Beam Lasers and 1 Pulse Laser and A 10 ton Medical Room whose Cr 400,000 x10 or Cr 4,000,000 cost is included in The Cr 26,000,000 cost and then investing the other Cr 24,000,000 in A Estate that nets him or her Cr 120,000 a month even without up to 2 other portfolio items?

One reason not to do it: your social status depends partially on your wealth, and it may not be something that the noble is even allowed to sell without permission from a sector duke.

Another reason: it's not a good financial move, because the income from the full estate minus the cost of the ship mortgage is less than the income from the diminished estate.

Sounds like a LOT of paperwork is involved. And Lawyers, lots of lawyers. And family members who may be further down the list of heirs, but may still have a legal say in what happens to the family property. THEY will surely get lawyers.

All of that will take time, more time, and money. Probably not worth it.

What if, just for once, someone doesn't get the best roll possible on the luckiest dice thrown in the last 12.552 years...? What if they get a modest result and gain a moderate advantage that doesn't break the game?

In any case, big estates or holdings are generally connected with politics and economic entanglements. Someone pulling that much money out of a family's holdings or out of the local economy will cause enormous problems for everyone else involved. That means endless legal wrangling as they try to block the transaction, get the noble cut out of the financial process and generally attempt to avoid being ruined. Chances are it would be used as evidence of incompetence and the noble would one day get legal letter telling them they no longer have an estate.

So what's stopping that player turning their estate into a literal Fortress where they can hangar their ship and supplies?
