Sorry, I fail to see the problem?

Assault does damage. Damage is defined on p74 to be against physical characteristics.

It may have worked differently in other editions, but that was then?

Damage is damage. See rule for when Travelers become damaged goods. Otherwise, the Referee gets to use Rule Zero if trying to tell a story to their players.

A lot of these discussions could be addressed adequately for most GMs through judicious application of Rule Zero....
