alternative dTon generation for Major/Minor/Incidental freight?

Postby HalC » Fri Jan 12, 2018 7:11 pm

Hello Folks,
Just out of curiosity, has anyone ever considered rolling 10d6 per Major cargo, 5d6 per minor cargo, and 1d10-1 for incidental cargoes in their games?

The reason I ask this, is because the current methodology seems to make it impossible for a freighter to take on any amount of freight whose digits end in 7, 8, or 9.

1d6 x 10 will always be in tens.
1d6 x 5 will always be in fives or tens
1d6 incidentals will always be integers between 1-6 - but never 7, 8, or 9.

Thought it might prove useful to roll 10d6 and get something like 35 dtons, or 37 dtons, or 28 dtons, or what have you. The range would be between 6 to 60, all numbers inclusive instead of 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, or 60 dtons.

Comments?

PS - don't know if anyone else came up with this independently. Was inspired by the GURPS FAR TRADER method of rolling 4d6 dtons per type of cargo being loaded on board...

If I ever need a freight lot of 7, 8, or 9 dtons, I select two (or more) incidental lots that add up to the needed amount. I don't see any reason to change the rules when that simple process works so well.

If you really, really need a lot of 7, 8 or 9 then, as the ref, add a few more or less tons to get the number. You don't have to roll where the players can see.

I’m OK with the system as is. If it results in the odd unfilled dton or two in the cargo hold - well, these things happen.
