Tales from the rift

Time to play with the new system creation rules from the Deep Space Exploration Handbook. All those new possibilities.

Take a sector map. Put a Void ring 6 parsecs wide around the inner four subsectors. Determine systems around the ring as per average density system rules. I left a few subsectors at rift density around the Spinward/Rimward edge so the four inner subsectors are a cluster near the edge of an arm. The inner subsectors will be generated but I will determine whether or not there are any civilizations. What's important, there have never been any signals from that cluster over the centuries. Until there can an attempt to bridge that gap, no one knows what is in that region. They need to design someway to cross depending on the best level of technology in the region. Someone MAY discover this one lone system in the ring that could be the stepping stone but that's only one way. What could be waiting in their Undiscovered Country?

Now you have me thinking a race of large intelligent reptilians done Avatar style having a low tech civilization. Like aslan, humans see a resemblance to old legendary Earth creatures and refer to them as dragons.
