Mongoose Traveller and T5 compatibility
So, I've been looking at a few things in T5, not with the intention of converting over, but looking to add to my Mongoose game, and I'm drawn to the Amindii from Regina.
My question, how easy is it to convert stat generation from one to the other? I know T5 uses the raw stat while Mongoose uses a DM. So for example, creating a human in both systems you roll 2D for each characteristic. Sounds fine.
But, an Amindii (giant anthropomorphic grasshopper) character has 4D strength (T5). My assumption (is this correct, or is there a conversion system?) that will translate directly to 4D in Mongoose. So here is the kicker... my Amindii gets a STR 18... the DM chart stop at 15 (+3). Where does that leave my Amindii?
My first thought is to continue the chart like this
15-16 +3
17-18 +4
19-20 +5
Etc
This will work nicely for other aliens too. The Virushi are horrendously strong and generate their STR characteristic using D6+10 (classic Traveller) and can go up to 20 after career adjustments.
Not counting that I find it hard to swallow that a giant grasshopper is going be stronger than a centaur with tank blood, have I got my head screwed on right about this?

Re: Mongoose Traveller and T5 compatibility
I continue to raise the DM every three values. I'm using T5's hex notation though (especially for Social Standing).

While on the subject of T5/MgT compatability
I have been re-reading T5 and MWM's two page teaser for the Galaxiad.
Are the MgT Starter Esseray the same as the T5/Galaxiad Essaray?
If so the spelling needs to be standardised (do they have English vs American spelling as a thing in the 57th century?)

Re: Mongoose Traveller and T5 compatibility
Traveller has notorious for its spelling and abbreviations since day one so for that just relax and lol

The '80s-style of the 57th century always bugged me the most. To this day, I still see new female Vargr furry art with leg warmers on some yahoo's Traveller fan-site.

So, back to my original question, do the stat dice of T5 track exactly to Mongoose Traveller?

Re: Mongoose Traveller and T5 compatibility
I'll have to check. If this is an animal we're talking about, I'd say they don't match at all between the two rule sets. Which rules don't you have?mancerbear wrote: ↑Mon Aug 21, 2017 7:58 pmSo, back to my original question, do the stat dice of T5 track exactly to Mongoose Traveller?
ADDED:
I looked in my Traveller 5.09 rules just now, and was reminded that its Characteristic Checks use a "roll under" mechanic. There are no Characteristic Modifiers. The same goes for its non-human player characters and NPCs.
Animals in Traveller 5.09 use just the END Characteristic. Animals in Mongoose Traveller (any) use a totally different stat block and game mechanic than T5.
Anyway... In the past, I would read the description of something in T5. And then re-create it for Mongoose Traveller using Mongoose Traveller rules. Doesn't take long to do. Much quicker than trying to figure out an algorithm to convert T5 stats into MgT1/2 stats. The main reason why the two games use different stats is because they use totally different game mechanics. If their mechanics were the same, there would be an obvious pattern found for converting stats from one game to the other.

No, this is for the Amindii, an alien minor race designed to be playable. Natives of Regina. They have a STR of 4d6, and was wondering how that would map over to Mongoose Traveller, consdiering that Virushi have 10+d6 in STR and are considered one of the strongest minor races.ShawnDriscoll wrote: ↑Mon Aug 21, 2017 8:26 pmI'll have to check. Re: Mongoose Traveller and T5 compatibility
So it turns out that T5 and Mongoose stats map exactly.
Fine, but come on; 4d6 for Strength?

Here's a range for 4D6. The mid range looks like decent values.

That's a Virushi, image from JTAS. The Virushi are among the largest intelligent races encountered by Humaniti. With quasi-centauroid bodies nearly 3.0 meters long, standing around 1.8 meters at the shoulder, and weighing around a ton, they are a formidable sight; however this effect is balanced by their well-justified reputation for pacifism.
I don't have an image if an Amindii but imagine a 7ft tall grasshopper.

Re: Mongoose Traveller and T5 compatibility
Explains their possible great strength. Stereotypical insect physiology.
Notice the Virushi or Amindii haven't taken over the Imperium just because they're very strong. The game allows for great strength but it's a rarity. Of course a referee can always decide it would be abused by players too much and ban the race as such while keeping in the realm of NPCs where such a quality would be a story device. Same could be said for many traits misused from the Sophont generator.
