Mongoose Traveller in Tandem w other RPGs ?

Postby domingojs23 » Tue Jul 11, 2017 3:30 am

Dear Friends,

To follow up my earlier question on jointly using MgT 1e and 2e, I'd now like to ask this: for those of you who play MgT -1e/2e or both - is there another tabletop RPG system you use extensively in tandem with MgT for your campaign ? Some may be using one or more among GURPS, D20 / T20, OSR (ie White Star), Stars w/o Number, Apocalypse/Dungeon World, Fate, Savage Worlds, D6, FASA Star Trek, 2d20, etc. Thanks !

When I was a kid, I used to grab rules from every RPG I had. Combat from one RPG. Planet/map gen from another RPG. Spaceship/vehicle design from another RPG.

These days I just use rules from MgT 1 and 2. Keeps things simple. I wish MgT was a thing 30+ years ago. Would have prevented lots of headaches back then.

I steal concepts from some games from time to time. For example, Ubiquity and a few other systems have a Take the Average mechanic that can really cut down on the dice rolling and speed up gameplay. It wouldn't work very well for attack rolls in Traveller but might be a good fit for Initiative or for resolving non conflict tasks where the Effect isn't important.

I'm toying with a few others too. Maybe some sort of points system that could be used to accumulate Boons - fits with drama/luck/style concepts and makes things a bit more cinematic. Also considering borrowing from Clockwork Dominion's Conditions for modifiers that could result from higher Effects.

I'm planning a upcoming M-Space campaign (M-Space is BRP derived), where I'll be using some things from Traveller.

Another experiment I'm considering - Clockwork Dominion uses a card deck instead of dice. Values on the cards range from -5 to +5. Add to a base of 7 and you get a range of 2 to 12. I don't think the distribution is the same as 2D6 - the deck has a lot more than 36 cards. But it's made me curious....

I use the Coriolis/Mutant year zero push mechanic. It allows the player a re-roll on a failed skill check, but at a cost. The cost in Coriolis is darkness points (DPs). One re-roll is allowed, but results in a DP. It's a point system whereby the GM can spend DPs to add complications for the players. Coriolis has a supernatural back ground, so instead of darkness I substitute Risk points (RPs). I also have a limit that there can't be more RPs than players. So the players have to be frugal with the re-rolls.

Another rule I've considered using is the Trust mechanic from Night's Black Agents. Players essentially rate how much his/her PC trusts the other PCs prior to play (secretly) then reveal the allotted points at the beginning of the session. They get to reset the trust points at the start of each session to represent shifting allegiance. The Trust points can be spent to aid other player characters (those your character trusts). This could be +DMs etc.. The other interesting thing about Trust is that the trustee can use the trust points against the truster resulting in -DMs. This could work well in a game with lots of factions and tension within the party. This might work well in my current 2300AD game where the party members have a diverse history with the various factions within the French Arm.

Stars Without Number, for the back of the book GM ideas and the Factions subsystem, but not for character gameplay mechanics.
