When I name non-player characters of Earth cultural background (as opposed to Vilani, Zhodani, Darrian, or other minor human races that dodged assimilation into the Ziru Sirka or Rule of Man, or non-human), I typically choose a personal name from one ethnic group and a family name from another -- more often personal name first, but sometimes family name first.

Examples: Li Descoureaux, Yang Felipe, Nangklao Clark

For characters from low-population home worlds, I have a convention that instead of a family name, their home world is often part of their name.

Example: Mary Hefry

Obviously, for characters not of Earth cultural heritage (whether through ancestry or assimilation), there are other naming schemes, a lot of which can be drawn from word generation tables (some of which are available on-line). Some even have lists of common names; "Eneri" is the most common Vilani personal name, to the point it's used in contexts like, "I'm just an average Eneri."

Where do I look for names? If I have an ethnicity in mind, I look for movies on IMDB from that country or language, look in the credits for minor cast or crew members, and pick a name that I can pronounce.

It's basically culture that determines naming patterns, which can take inspiration from concepts and natural phenomenon, as well as fashion.

Reality (Leigh) Winner is a recent example.

Geographical and surnames can also be adopted as first names, in tribute to to a region or a family union.

Then you have the Roman custom of naming girls after the clan name, and adding a number to keep them sorted out.

Heck I have a excel sheet with the 1000 least common surnames from the last census that I use...

Though recently I have been using 16th and 17th puritan names as of late.

When adopting names for use in a new culture, people sometimes look for similar-sounding names that are common to the new culture, use words that have the same meaning, or just pick names from the new culture arbitrarily.

A few naming conventions from fiction:

Tolkien gave plant names to Hobbit women. Most other Tolkien names were descriptions, in languages he invented.

Gene Wolfe wrote that in the Long Sun series, males were customarily named for animals ("Monkey") or animal derivatives ("Horn"), females were named for plants ("Ivy") or plant derivatives ("Leaf"), and robots were named for minerals ("Marble") or mineral derivatives ("Sand").

If the invented languages in Traveller were defined in greater detail, some of those customs could be used to come up with more types of names.

I run a human-centric Traveller game, so the names I'm producing will reflect that.

I am making some new tables with female names, then I will make a few bundles of mixed gender names and last names.

I do have access to a bunch of Traveller Alien words from the different major races - I'll make some tables for those after I'm done with the humans - I'll make at least one of each type available for free.

Hi Guys!

I've been away for a bit, but in that time I've published a 6-volume set of modern, mixed-gender names suitable for use by authors, GM's, players, and anybody else who draws a blank when trying to come up with a name.

Each volume contains over 1290 random names, all 6 volumes contain enough random names to name every person in a small town; over 46,650 possible names.

You can find them here - along with a pay-what-you-want option:

Enjoy!
