Pre-generating Characters?

Postby Hopeless » Tue May 30, 2017 8:47 pm

Is this worth the effort?

Currently working up potential characters, but can't help wondering if it's worth the trouble!

Using Clement Sector and 1e rules I've so far developed an Luna born Uplifted Gorilla and former Marine whose a talented sculptor working with a former Politician turned Reporter and a Burned former Spy who had to flee her former Orbital Construction career after she alone escaped an ambush set by a traitor in her Government.

Still working on the other two but looking to use the latest Plots book as the basis for the game.

What do you think?

Is it better the players create their own characters or do pregens work?

One shot scenarios, or ensuring the party has specific skills that the dungeon master knows will be essential to accomplish one or all of their goals.

Does tend to require some acting ability on the part of the players.

I have never even looked at a pregenerated character, ever.

Oh I could snap up a pre-gen with no problem if it was necessary for some reason! I think it's a challenge and fun. Otherwise I prefer to roll up characters with all the randomness that means I'm still being challenged even a little bit. To me it's part of Traveller. I would have no issue if there was a point system generator like a lot of games have adopted.

pre-gens are best with teaching new players Traveller as they can jump right into a game and worry later about spending time making a personal one. Also good for tournaments and game con set ups. Last is for people jumping into a game in progress.

For players new to Traveller, I use pre-gens all the time. I let the players choose from a stack of characters.

There are books full of pre generated characters.

If you tweak Darth Vader's entry, you could have a noble Imperium trouble shooter.
