[Software] Sector - a Traveller map generator

Postby Gee4orce » Fri Apr 28, 2017 3:08 pm

I thought some of you might be interested in a new app I've made for iPhone & iPad: Sector

It's just a simple app at the moment that's based on the Traveller SRD document, and generates an entire sector worth of worlds at a time. The system density is set to vary from concentrated towards the centre of the sector, falling off towards the edges (although, like everything else, there's a big dose of randomness to it).

All the worlds have a full UPP with a btt of additional explanatory text for those of us who can never remember what each code means.

The map colours the world based on hygrographics, and shows the atmosphere type with stroke width and colour too. The overall size gives an indication of the size of the world also.

Sector also draws trade routes and attempts to name clusters of worlds and empty areas. All names are random, but based on real worlds and place names, so there's a bit of grammatical structure to them.

You can edit the map too - tapping a hex either removes a world if there's one there, or creates a new one if it's an empty hex.

I'm intrigued to see what people think, so please download it. It's been a labour of love, and quite a fun project. I have some ideas about things I'd like to add next. I'd really like to expand it to generate the entire extended system details (ie. all the worlds in a system, not just one) - but I think that could get overwhelming!

Thanks for reading. Here are a few promo codes so you can get it for free! :

Support for official star maps is a possibility. This app was based on something I built years ago, and that app could import the standard format sector files. In principle I could add the same thing to this app too. I'll add it to the backlog, although I can't make any promises at the moment.

Or Android....

Then I can pop it into my Android VM, which resides on my Windows laptop?

Does that count as porting it to Windows?

Hmm - no plans for other platforms just yet. Never say never though, but at the moment it's iOS only.

There is a tool by Microsoft that's supposed to automate the vast majority of converting a IOS app to Windows 10. Don't have any experience with it, but maybe somebody on the board has?

There's various ways to run Apple programs in Windows, depending on what language they are written in. And if you like to program in those languages.
https://channel9.msdn.com/Blogs/One-Dev ... to-Windows shows what can be done with very crude iOS apps that do nothing special.

I'm just submitting another minor update that fixes a silly bug, but also adds the ability to share your sector with others.

This means that all the players in a group can have exactly the same sector, and therefore their own personal copy of the map. That should be a handy feature. Note that this includes any worlds you've created or removed, as well as trade routes and cluster and rift labels. However, if the recipient then edits that sector themselves, cluster and rift names get regenerated.

Even if you don't want to share it with anybody, I recommend using this feature to save your favourite sectors somewhere like Dropbox or iCloud, or just email it to yourself.

I use a program called Bluestacks to run Android apps on Windows. There may be a similar program to run IPhone apps on Windows, or maybe an IPhone Bluestacks.

There's a new update in review that adds a map legend so you can see what the colour coding means. Should be available in a day or two.
