Art: Light freighter

Postby wbnc » Sat Nov 05, 2016 12:10 pm

Oky s I set down and gave modeling a star and plenty for the background. Gives it a bit more solid feel. at least to my eyes....lighting is still off a bit but have a few ideas on how to fix that.

used one of my Sandpiper Light freighters for this experiment.

I see low contrast and soft shadows, like it was in atmosphere.
In space we should see sharp shadows and high contrast, what is lit is bright and shadows are black.

We would not see that incredibly detailed starscape in the background with anything lit in the picture.

Here is the shot with harder shadows and just the black background.

That is probably more realistic, but I must confess less exiting.

Perhaps a weak, toned down starscape in the background?

I'm thinking the same things. Looking for a suitable background matte

Well, and with that much of the planet in shadow and being that far away, you probably would be able to see some stars. The reason you can't in those other orbital shots (I would think) is the same reason you can't see any stars if you take a picture with a streetlight or the full moon in the shot.

Found a background I think fits...and added so haze effects to the planet to show it's atmosphere a bit more clearly.

Looks good. Have you played around with compositing at all?

not yet, I have been teaching myself the basics...before moving on to more advanced tools. At some point, I may break down and go take some classes using the software, and maybe some art classes....
