Imperial Interdiction Satellite

Postby Reynard » Fri Sep 30, 2016 2:01 pm

Going through my extensive Traveller collection I dig out an LLB from 1981 by Games Workshop who then did third party products for Traveller. This one is IISS Ship Files and features six ship files with history, Revised Second Edition High Guard stats and deck plans. The unit that caught my attention is the Imperial Standard Automated Interdiction Satellite. It reminded me High Guard 2e definitely allows for an actual automated station. This needs to be redesigned.

Some things described don't exist in the design rules today (meteor/ debris shields). It makes use of solar panels and batteries, perfect for a drop and forget system. Automated satellites have been referred to in some adventures over the decades which oppose players entering interdicted wilderness red zones not important enough to leave standing squadrons or fleets yet relatively cheap enough to get the job done. Virtual Crew and Fire Control makes this possible. I completely removed the living space in the original design that was for visiting maintenance crews. Power requirements now are half the Basic Ship power because life support isn't needed. When the station keeping routine is activated, the weapons are in shut down. The station would naturally forgo station keeping for weapons if there is a threat. During combat, the solar panels retract and the station uses the High Efficiency Batteries for power. Essentially, this is a gigantic drone built using the station design rules in HG2e.

Tenders would transport these to their destination and station them in what pattern and amount gets the job done. Standard might be sitting in the 100D of a planet high enough their guns can strike targets that get through and attempt landing. They would also overlap each other's fire so each satellite would have cover from at least two more. Some system might only have a few or even one guarding less important location and just showing deterring force to the curious.

As always, pick away at this and see if I rushed through the building.

You probably want to booby trap the missile magazines, seeing that they're such hot, tradeable commodity.

Hey, if someone bypasses the TL 12 booby-trapped outside airlock, they're welcome to the missiles! I know the iris valves to those ammo rooms will be secured normally making access a pain but if someone can get to the satellite in the first place AND pass the front door....

If we want to leave it and forget it, it should not use ammo. Neither should it be trivial to destroy the satellite.

If we interdict a primitive world we do not want to be too obvious, primitive telescopes can be built at low TL.

How about something like this:

Code: Select all

TL 12 Hull 44 45,1

70 dT, M-1, planetoid. MCr 30 + software.

Planetoid with EM Masking and some extra armour, so not obvious or trivial to destroy. Armed with a long range particle barbette and a single pulse laser (Long range) turret for missile defence and warning shots. M-1 drive so can move out of the way of attacks.

Repair drones to maintain it. Power plant, solar sail (if we want to be obvious), and a big battery.

A small, stealthed 10 dT craft (MCr 3) for refuelling (6 dT tank).

I am fairly certain that the Sattelite command system would happily give you a few missiles, some photons, maybe some of it's surplus plasma.... if you try to get that close. Problem with raiding an automated weapons platform for goodies is that you have get past its guns
the last thing you might hear is...
You are entering restricted space, alter course immediately or you will be fired on, there will be no further warnings

Exactly! These satellites are normally orbital warning signs. They broadcast warnings and their presence is not hidden to tell you one last time GO AWAY!. If a protected area is meant to be never revealed then a hidden weapon platform to lure a target close to destroy it will make sense. When you enter a Red Zone whether you had knowledge about it beforehand or not you will have your communication receive first warning. You come close enough for the satellite to detect you, you will receive a second warning you are now in violation and go away. When you reach the range of the missiles, you will be told weapons are locked and will open fire unless you leave NOW. More than likely it won't tell you what its weapon load is or their range and with the extension net (An extension net increases the range at which a sensor suite would normally be able to obtain Limited or Full detail by a single step.) it knows more about you than you it. Somehow I don't think it will give any more warning. If there are more than one satellite in the defense net, they all know. I'm sure the Imperium make that information public so you stay away.

But it wouldn't be an adventure unless you didn't try.

The satellites are actually red herrings, though they do act as forward observation posts for a meson gun deeply sighted.

Surprise!

Well, now we know why it's a Red Zone, a poor, lonely meson gun.

It's a red zone so it has an excuse to target ships that violate the red zone for some target practice.

IT'S A TRAP! At that close range we won't last long against that planetary meson gun!

Wait, I have a better idea. It's a planetary based doomsday weapon. Stay out of its range and go around it. They built a trillion credit weapon that can't hit anything.

That architect is so dead.
