Character Generation Worksheet

Postby sjmiller » Wed Jan 28, 2015 5:24 pm

I found that with some of my players who have never played Traveller before, they could really use a character generation worksheet, taking them step by step through character generation. I also gave them a big sheet of skills, so that they could just add a mark or alter their skills as we went through character generation.

I think the form is quite useful, but I do need to add in the pre-career options of university or military academies. I am thinking of putting that on a seperate sheet, since it can have a lot of steps involved in and of itself.

I am not sure if it is kosher to share this form, or I would link to it here. Has anyone else created a form like this? What do you think a form like this would need?

Yes, I've created such.

I label the different parts as per the checklist that is in the book.

Section 1 Characteristics
There is a quick reference that lists the DM for different characteristics. Yes, I could have built this into the form so that it is automatically calculated, but for new folks to the system I want them to get started learning this.

Section 2 is background skills
Right in the title I note that the number of background skills is 3+EDU DM
2a Homeworld
A box to list the home world and UWP
A list of the trade codes and skills so that you don't have to look them up.
2b Education Skills
The list from the book
For 2a and 2b, you just circle the applicable skills

The next part is fairly large and as mentioned, the columns are labeled as per the book chargen checklist.

Each row is a term with columns for everything. Aging is the last column for rows 4 and higher. Have the aging rolls and info from the book listed to the side.

Under this is section 4 for listing basic training skills.

At the bottom is the actual step by step checklist from the book for someone to follow.

Section 10 is at the side for listing muster rolls and results. Info is included for calculating the number of muster rolls.

Pretty much the only page you need to use in the book is the career charts. Sometimes the injury section and life events need to be consulted.

The end result is not pretty with skills in multiple areas as they are gotten but it is very structured for step by step chargen. I can let the player go through it and then see what every roll and choice was to double check things.

I don't think I can as it has so much of the info from the book included.

Personally, I’d actually like to see the character generation process guided a little more by the character sheet directly. It’s not as if the backstory becomes irrelevant after play begins.
