[Freelance Traveller] January 2015 ready for download!

We're running quite the bit behind, this month, but at long last, we're posted! Freelance Traveller's first issue of 2015 is ready and waiting for you to download and read!

This month's featured adventure is Dave Nelson's "Building Security" (originally published under the title "It Beats Shoveling Shemdur in Aramanx, Barely").

January 2015 also introduces a new feature, "Traveller By the Byte", where we print the source code for a small (maybe medium-sized) Traveller-related program.

We also have the usual assortment of reviews, stories, adventures, and ship designs for your enjoyment!

It seems appropriate to use a computer language that was used when Traveller was just a baby. And COBOL and FORTRAN listings would fill up the newsletter. Ha!

The APL thing warms my geeky heart. I'm not an APL fan myself, but I've written enough FORTH and Haskell traveller utilities to root for another underdog.

COBOL certainly would, because of the DOCUMENTATION DIVISION. being so verbose without actually doing anything. FORTRAN can be concise, just like BASIC. That's why the idea for TBtB is that they're small-to-medium programs; something large and monolithic like GAL really would fill an issue or three on its own.

OTOH, APL does have potential for framing a domain-specific language, and the Traveller APL Workspace is actually sorta on the edge of that.

Ooo, FORTH! Another language to play with that you can still find. And another candidate for domain-specific languages.

/me finds it somewhat entertaining that old languages and old systems implement concepts that have become 'in' only comparatively recently, with shiny new labels ('domain-specific language', 'functional programming', ...), and grafting (badly) the idea onto the root stock of C.
