Japanese DP?

Postby Spectrar Ghost » Sun Feb 13, 2011 11:08 pm

Why do no Japanese ships get DP secondaries? Specifically, The Akizuki DDs, the Oyodo, and the Taiho carry the 3.9"/65cal DP, described in OOB as "the best Japanese AA gun of the war".

Other ships carried DP weapons as well, though some had poor rates of traverse, I am given to understand.

Dual purpose secondaries, designed for surface and AA use. Effectively, all US and British cruisers, aircraft carriers, all US and some British battleships, and Fletcher-class destroyers may fire their secondaries as AA at their full range and AD.

The Akitsuki were designed as fleet defense destroyers. Thieir primary guns were the 3.9"/65 DP, good to 21,300yd range and 42,650ft ceiling, according to Combined Fleet. Apparently they performed better than the 5" guns they replaced as the standard secondary armament.

The Taiho and Oyodo also carried them, and I believe the Yamatos were slated to have them replace their secondary batteries when they came up for refit again.

Its probably more a case of "why aren't they penalised for having them?" I'm not sure, not having a copy to hand, but I think the AA factors for the ships take the 3.9s into account. If so the ships concerned should be added to the list of ships affected. If I get a chance I'll go back and look at the copy of the master file (they weren't ships that I statted, but I ought to have copies of the files somewhere).

Akitsuki (8x 3.9"DP (4x2)):

Secondary 15" 2AD 1DD Weak
AA 7" 4AD

Oyodo (8x 3.9"DP (4x2)):
Secondary 15" 1AD 1DD Weak
AA 7" 2AD

Taiho (12x 3.9"DP (6x2)):
Secondary 15" 2AD 1DD Weak
AA 7" 6AD

I'm not sure whether the AA is based on initial numbers of 25mm AA, final counts, or somewhere in between, so I'll leave that research up to you. Thanks for your time DM.

That works. I'd personally be willing to sacrifice some base AA for the extra reach, but no worries. Thanks.
