Legend Quickstart

Postby alex_greene » Tue Dec 31, 2013 1:07 am

I think we need a Legend Quickstart - basic rules, simplified chargen, some pregens and a mini-adventure - and that the QSR should be made available free in FLGS any time of the year.

Legend needs more FLGS exposure, particularly among newcomers to roleplaying - at its price, Legend could be the perfect starting roleplaying game for a new generation just getting into RPGs for the first time.

The $1 rulebook isn't enough? I think Legend got a lot of exposure online because of that.

It's only the PDF that's $1. The QSR would be a great starter to whet the appetite for the hardcopy book.

Also, Mongoose could consider investing in things like Legend and Traveller LBB covers. Something to make your LBBs stand out; make them look like prestige items.

The initial exposure was good - but Legend needs sustained exposure and promotion. Otherwise, everyone's just going to think that there's nothing new going on. They're going to wander on over to RQ6 or BRP, and not look back.

I think this is a great idea!

From my RPG Geek Secret Santa I received the Fate Core rulebook, but also the Fate Accelerated book, which is their quickstart rules. (I also got Gladiators of Legend and Samurai of Legend :) )

It's brilliant to have the quickstart rules as it's sooo simple to just jump in and get going with it, and I can read more in depth with the Core Book when I want to / Have time.

The quickstart is also awesome to hand around to your F2F group for quick rules checks. As GM you keep the big book, but they have the quickstart to share around.

There's a neat cheat sheet out, but I'd contribute to a quick start if someone else knows how to edit. I'm a newb myself, though, so perhaps some who have been with the game a while wants to weigh in as well?

There's a pile of books from Design Mechanism which are also $1

There's 2 campaigns in there along with Monster Coliseum, a vikings setting, 'Mythic Japan'. It's to Legend's advantage that someone using it can draw on all the other material in the D100/BRP/RQ/OQ family of games. I think the idea that an audience is going to exclusively stick to Legend publications doesn't make sense - if you want a meaty jungle sandbox then why wouldn't you pick up Monster Island, or if you want more of a desert sword & sorcery Spider God's Bride? It's up to you what rules system you use when you start playing.

That's a feature rather than a bug...

I'd argue that the fact that Legend is broadly compatible with the other RPGs in the d100 family is one of the best things about it. However, only two d100 games are released under the OGL (the other being OpenQuest / Rennaissance) - the importance of this for those of us who like to tinker should not be underestimated.

Under the OGL, anyone could write a QuickStart version of Legend.

What do you mean by QSR? Wikipedia says:
QSR can refer to:
Quick service restaurants, also known as fast food restaurants
Quasar - Quasi-Stellar Radio-source
Salerno Costa d'Amalfi Airport, IATA airport code
Quality System Regulation - USA FDA regulations requiring manufacturers to implement and follow quality systems
QSR International - Melbourne based software developer specialising in Qualitative Research Software
Q codes for Amateur_radio

What do you mean by QSR? Wikipedia says:
Quick Start Rules? Just a stab in the dark. Could be Quality System reference.

Quick Start Rules. :)

I agree.[/quote]If the Q.S.R. encouraged newcomers to buy the PDF for a dollar, groovy. :) But it should be made available during Free RPG Day to encourage newcomers to give the $10 hardcopy a go, particularly if this is going to be their first taste of roleplaying.

You always remember your very first roleplaying game, with more affection than any other game. For me, it's Traveller. I was never a big fan of RuneQuest - but I am a big fan of Legend, and I'd do whatever it takes to make Legend (if I'm not promoting Mongoose Traveller) the First Game for a whole generation of newcomers, both kid and adult alike.
