I don't have a problem with Vi. It's Vi's users, their subversion of Western values with their radical command/insert mode agenda...

The major attractions of Legend to me is the OGL - it lets me get in and build my own custom version of the game. We now have three d100 variants released under the OGL - OpenQuest, Rennaissance, and Legend...
I second this. The OGL will hopefully get a few third party publishers in on the action...creating adventures and new settings.

A new (to Legend) publisher was recently soliciting ideas for Legend/RQ6 resources over at BRP Central.

That's a shame.
drdentista wrote:I've been a fan since the late 80's and I own practically everything from RQ3, MRQ1 and MRQ2. Now, I have to rebuy stuff again, and there are no cool adventures to be seen on the horizon...
When RQ3 came out there were a lot of reprints/reworkings.

When HeroWars came out there were a lot of reprints/reworkings.

When HeroQuest came out there were a lot of reprints/reworkings.

When Mongoose RQI came out there were a lot of reprints/reworkings.

When Mongoose RQII came out there were a lot of reprints/reworkings.

Presumably, when RQ6 comes out then we will get some things reprinted/reworked.

This is the nature of Glorantha. If you have a new set of rules then you can either say "Look at some out of print material and adapt it to the new rules" or you can produce a new version that is compatible with the new rules. Either way you will get people who complain.

Personally, I got used to it years ago.
drdentista wrote:And Glorantha... With RQ3 it was getting more and more complex and forbidding. Lots of do's and don'ts and lots of self-proclaimed Gloranthan scholars shoving their version of the truth down each others throats. I was genuinely happy with MRQ and the take on the Second Age. But now that's dead in the water. Again...
The RQ3 system was slightly more complex than the RQ2 version, but not overly so. It simplified a lot of stuff as well.

Regarding Gloranthan scholars shoving their version of the truth down each others throats, they have always done that. It's something you either live with or you don't read Gloranthan forums. They will only get worse, I am afraid.

Mongoose Glorantha was well-supported but flawed. It seemed that they did not read the existing background material and simply imposed what they wanted. They did not respond to criticism well, either.
drdentista wrote:With the transfer from MRQ2 to Legend, and away from Glorantha I must say that I've had it. So, for my playing group, it's back to old-school AD&D (1&2e) and the plethora of settings and ready-made adventures for that game.
Legend will almost certainly have a lot more supported settings that MRQ and many more than RQ2/3. It won't be Glorantha, though, but Gloranthan fans will have a huge amount of material already in existence and a lot more coming out for HeroQuest and RuneQuest in the future.

Good. The whole point of playing RPGs is to have fun and enjoy playing.

Lol... maybe you should give up using all sorts of things that get more complicated as you get older. There is no shortage of them.

EDIT: But I do understand where you are coming from. I had to come back and admit that I hated where d20 went in 3.0 and 3.5 because it was cumbersome to me. So I think you learned the wrong lesson. I'd go with a rules lite version and find players who were happy with it too.

I actually think the OpenQuest is the lightweight version of the system - it's a good game in its own right for those who feel that Legend is a bit too crunchy for their tastes.

Personally I think that Legend comes close to hitting the sweet spot between too much crunch and too little crunch. I think that the character creation system and combat system in Legend hit the right notes, but the magic systems are a bit vague in places by comparison. It will be interesting to see where RQ 6 takes the system.

Systemless is more rules light.

Absolutely, I'm running it now. So much easier in many ways and the party actually thinks before they fight. It's like a miracle or something!

I'm particularly interested in the up-coming Clockwork & Cthulhu using the OpenQuest variant Renaissance system.

I have tendency to enjoy the gamut of rules weight. From GURPS to Over the Edge. Though players had issues with both chargen and combat, the rules seem to have hit enough positive notes--we'll be planning future games.

I'm also very interested in RQ6. In particular the changes to the magic system. The de-emphasis of combat in common magic (now Folk Magic), and the new Mysticism system has me intrigued. Perhaps we'll be using RQ/Legend magic in future games.

Overall, I couldn't be happier with Legend. Sure there could always be an extra bit of clarification here and there, but that happens no matter what game system you play - something always comes up that isn't covered explicitly in the rules.

I like it, and my Mac and will be content to use both for many, many years!

Now if I could only talk my boss into ditching the Windows based PC's...

Clearly your boss doesnt want to pay the outrageous prices for several Macs, likes the wider variety of software available to Windows PCs, and doesn't have a bunch of really technical guys handy to set up an easy to use variant of linux in the office. :P

I have to agree with alex_greene here. I am creating a Player's Guide for the World of Greyhawk setting using mainly Legend with a bit of BRP. I am not a huge Glorantha fan and just know Greyhawk better ...

There are a LOT of d&d converts here these days. I'm one of them and I've seen that number jump radically when Legend was released. Unfortunately for old school runequest gamers we just don't have the interest in Glorantha because it seems alien to us. However we are very lucky that Mongoose seems to have realized that and appear to be encouraging us to thrive with new materials.

I'd love to release my own game world as free source material but it's not quite there. I bet there are a lot of us in mid-process of doing that. :)

Oh and as promised I have started work with a gamer buddy on a random monster generator. It'll be in php (no sql required) and must be run off a web server but we hope to make it easy to use. I can't promise anything but we're trying at least.

Sweet!

btw: Count me in the "Coming from D&D" camp as well.

Legend also got me interested enough to go buy Elric! after some people told me it has some cool tidbits that never made it into RQII or Mongoose's Elric of Melniboné (which is still on my "to buy" list).

I'm ex-D&D also.

If you like dark and gritty, low magic S&S settings, Elric of Melnibone for MRQ2 won't disappoint. It is on the whole, excellent (some minor bits of errata is all)!

The magic systems faithfully emulate those in the book. The magic from this setting would work really well for all you Conanphiles  out there as well. REH loved his Runes!

And magical healing, doesn't exist per se, so make sure at least one of the PC's, who doesn't get involved in combat, max's out First Aid and Heal!

But speaking of Elric ... what does the campaign or adventure is like? Are you humans and the white elves are enemies? You are not playing Elric himself, do you?
