RuneQuest 6
Loz and Pete Nash have just made a big announcement..

(apologies to Mongoose).

A bit sad to hear this, as it sounds like there will be no coordination between Legend and RQ 6 then. So, instead of Legend being the system and Glorantha being a 3rd party setting, the systems (and thus, rules) will fork.
Well, nothing do to about it, but I think its sad that system don't cooperate - we don't really need more competitors.

The systems will likely be close enough that converting will be very easy, so mix and match at will.Dan True wrote:A bit sad to hear this, as it sounds like there will be no coordination between Legend and RQ 6 then. People do that already with the various BRP/RQ versions out there.

This is tough. Loz and Pete wrote the core book and most of the good stuff that supplements it. It sounds like Loz and Pete will use the same basic system in MRQ2 with some small improvements. If anyone is capable of perfecting this system, it's those guys. I'm very intrigued with what Loz and Pete will do with the MRQ2 system, and will probably buy it. It also looks like they will be able to publish third age Glorantha material.
On the other hand, I'm already heavily invested in the MRQ2 system and Legend will use the same system. Also, Elric is my main setting at the moment. So as long as Mongoose retains the license for that, I will probably still buy Mongoose stuff. Of course, if Loz and Pete manage to get permission to publish Elric or other eternal champion material and the RQ6 engine turns out to be as good as I think it will be, I may very well defect.

Yes, but I still can't help feeling like we would all benefit more if we had one company making the system and another writing Glorantha stuff - instead of two companies with many ties, almost exactly the same system and both printing their nearly-identical rulebooks and their own settings...jarulf wrote:The systems will likely be close enough that converting will be very easy, so mix and match at will.Dan True wrote:A bit sad to hear this, as it sounds like there will be no coordination between Legend and RQ 6 then. It just seems like a waste of good ressources, when cooperation and coordination would be better.
But I guess there's nothing to do about this. And I am so sad Pete and Loz will not be working on Legend
I will definately stay with Legend, as I don't care for Glorantha.. but I may well buy the MRQ6 books and use any changed rules, as I am sure Pete and Loz can only perfect the system even more.

Well, not really.
I had expected Loz and Pete to do this, perhaps as part of Moon Design. Having their own company makes them separate from Moon Design, but they are still definitely in the fold.
I am quite pleased about this as it means that Mongoose can use Legend to produce material for very different worlds/settings than The Design Mechanism. RuneQuest can then concentrate on Glorantha or whatever settings that Pete/Loz want to use.
It's interesting that RuneQuest is going to allow third parties to publish RuneQuest supplements. I wonder how that will turn out.

Will they both use the BRP system as their base game engine?

They will use the d100 system that is used for BRP, Legend, GORE, OpenQuest and other versions of RuneQuest.alex_greene wrote:Will they both use the BRP system as their base game engine?
Since RQ came before BRP, BRP could be said to use the RQ system

I think that the Moon Design blog snafued it. I used precisely the same text and code in all the announcements I posted, and everywhere else the link works just fine.By the way, the link on the anbnouncement website is srong - it looks as though it doesn't have the http:// prefix, so tries to open up a local page. Ouch. This really makes it tough. One the one hand, I am ecstatic that Loz and Pete are going to continue with the system they built rather then work on (IMO) an inferior system.
However, now I am really torn. I was 100% behind Legend, but basically I have the choice of buying Legend, the "archived" version of the Loz and Pete game, or the current living rules of RQ6 continually updated by the artists who made the system I think is brilliant.
I'll definitely support Loz and Pete (I'll even buy Glorantha stuff just to keep them in business). Mongoose, I dunno. No Gareth, Vincent, Loz, Pete; what full-time writers does Mongoose have at this point?
Matt, these new Legend publications best be well-edited, you're under the gun now.
Seriously though, I'm still planning on getting Age of Treason as well as keeping up with Clockwork & Chivalry as well as Deus Vult.
In the end, I'm hoping this will lead to a cavalcade of great new compatible content for the Legend/RQ6 super-system.

Got to agree - if Runequest 6 is up to scratch I probably would not buy new Legend core tules but would buy supplements and scenarios from Mongoose..
Maybe Mongoose should shelve Legend and just produce products that use Runequest 6?
THe upside for gamers is two streams of materials for the same (Similar) ruleset we all know and love!!

I like this system more than any other so I will continue to use Legend.
I must say that although I'm not big on Glorantha (but it is fun to play) I'll look at RQ 6. After all, these men with all their talents put out a masterpiece of a game like MRQ as well as Vikings (Loz), it would be worth looking at anything they make.

The RQ6 core rules will be setting independent. Glorantha will only come in as separate supplements later, and it will not be the only setting - Gwenthia was mentioned, as well as generic supplements.Dan True wrote:I will definately stay with Legend, as I don't care for Glorantha.
MRQ2 and RQ6 will probably be similar enough that mixing and matching will be an automatic success (95% chance).alex_greene wrote:Will they both use the BRP system as their base game engine?
BRP is a separate system but, as it is derived from the original RuneQuest (as noted by others), it is similar enough that you could port over parts of the rules between the three systems at normal chance with no difficulty modifier.
This is from my reading of the information available at this time.

I find this all very curious.
MRQII had the system with Glorantha and other settings.
It seems Issaries Inc feels Glorantha is still worth publishing.
It seems Pete and Loz feel the system is still worth publishing, with Gloantha and other settings.
It seems Mongoose feel the system is still worth publishing, without Glorantha but with other settings.
Surely all of these interests could have been served without having to execute MRQII? I wonder who pulled the trigger?
Why does the saying,"Too many cooks..." spring to mind?

I also fear there may be some broth spoiling afoot. I loved RQ3 and enjoyed the BRP big book. MRQ2 introduced the combat manouevres which I like. A few tweaks is all that was really required for MRQ2 (Noted on various threads on this forum. Movement clarification, economics...). Between these and my own house rules I really don't feel the need for yet another rewrite of the same basic system so soon. At all in fact. Maybe the parties involved will simply do an online update for those of us who supported their initial efforts? I doubt it. ...and as for two simultaneous competing rewrites! I'm a bit of a diehard and may fork out for good adaptable scenarios/campaign material but I fear I may have had a bellyful of redrafted rules.
