What rank would the commander have?

Postby JMISBEST » Thu Aug 01, 2019 2:32 pm

A Friend is working on A Legends Campaign that's basically A Legends Version of A Mercenary Type Traveller campaign and wants to know what rank would the commander of The Mercenary Army The Pcs sign up with hold when he or she commands 30 platoons of 44 Regular Soldiers and 4 platoons of 34 Soldiers that are Elite Veterans?. Also don't forget that this is Fantasy not Sci-Fii

Sounds as though that's a Brigade made of between 2-6 Battalions, so you might call the leader a Brigadier.

Historically, a Duke or other noble would command such an army, and wouldn't have a rank as such, but would just be Duke Smith or Baron Jones.

My friend claims she's decide to increase the army her Pcs will serve in to 1 that masses 64 very small companies, each 60 personnel strong. Does that change the commanders rank?

Not really. Fantasy Ranks are very vague anyway. It's difficult fitting modernish ranks such as Captain, Lieutenant, Major, Colonel, General and Brigadier into Fantasy armies anyway, so you might as well make them up.

I always think about how big armies are. In my fantasy games, a General commands an army, a Brigadier commands a Brigade, which might be part of an army or might be when two armies join, depending on the size of the armies.

In any case, the structure would nor be flat, with 60 platoon leaders reporting to one officer, instead you might have 6 platoon leaders reporting to an officer and 10 such officers reporting to the leader of the army, or 3 platoon leaders reporting to a commander and then 4 reporting to another commander and 5 of those reporting to the leader of the army.

If the leader of a Brigadier, you just have to work out the ranks in between. So a Platoon leader might be a Captain who reports to a major who reports to a Brigadier, or a Captain reporting to a Major reporting to a Colonel reporting to a Brigadier, ot however you, or your friend, might think it should work.
