What's with the weird forum symbols???

When I log in and look at the "Vview new posts" list since my last logon

I get that Orange means unread posts, and grey means no unread posts (I run through my notification emails first before getting the list) but there are weird combos of 1 and 2 squares, some are rhombii, some have dots in, what does it all mean???

Possibly just trying to display something that isn't in your font?

If you scroll to the bottom there is a Legend that tells you exactly what they mean

Forgot to add... from here go up one level then scroll to bottom.

I found the legend, which doesn't explain the dots, though I suspect that those mark the threads I am following.

Of course it seems stupid for the legend not to be on every page with the symbols.
