So, who got the Star Wars licence?

Postby Xex » Sun Jan 02, 2011 3:52 pm

In their blog Mongoose mentions that they were beat to the Star Wars licence by another company. Furthermore, it was hinted that this company is not known for minitures, meaning that we may be seeing a new rpg for Star Wars. This makes me very excited, as while I like SAGA edition, it does have its flaws. I would like a new, non d20 ruleset for a new Star Wars rpg.

The question is though, which company got the licence? My guess would be FFG, though its probably wrong. :)

What do you lot think?

Shame that Mongoose didn't get it, but Cubilce7 is a good company.
Down the street, third door on the left.
Up the ladder, third floor, right hand corridor, 6 doors down.
Through the door, across the field with the space cows to the lamp post.
Climb the lamp post and jump directly upwards.
Land on the bicycle.

SAGA was a very specific rules system developed in the 90's for the Dragonlance Fifth Age rpg and the later adapted for a Marvel rpg. Its used a card based mechanic.

A true SW SAGA edition would rock though and indeed it does as I'm designing one at the moment!

If it's Cubicle 7 they're doing a good job keeping it under wraps (though I don't see why they would want to); they weren't quite when they got the Lord of the Rings license and there's nothing on their website to indicate that they have Star Wars.

Star Wars and LotR are big time licenses; does C7 have the manpower for that? I'd hate to see a Decipher Games repeat.

As an aside, the fans over at starwars.com are getting pretty irritated by the lack of news as well.

Ok, for those not familar with all of WotC's d20 systems/settings and the shorthand for them. The last version of WotC's d20 Star Wars was called the "Saga Edition" vs "Star Wars" or "Revised Edition".

Immediately the gaming community (ok the d20 community) took to calling it the "SAGA Edition" giving us "Original", "Revised" and "SAGA" editions.

Yes I was also working for the company at the time and know the line editor for SW SAGA edition.

Say what's that, a new game? M-U-S-T   B-U-Y G-A-M-E!

Which is inaccurate as a rule system exists called the SAGA system as referred to in my last post. Better to call it 'Saga Edition' rather then 'SAGA Edition.' Why make its uppercase? What was the point? Its simply inaccurate if you have any depth of knowledge of RPGs and other systems as it impies a Star Wars game that uses the old SAGA system, eg:

Dragonlance SAGA (real product/game line) edition.
Marvel SAGA (real product/game line) edition.

... Star Wars SAGA (not a real product/game line) edition.

Leave it as it was orginally and officially named: Star Wars Saga Edition. Job done!

Looks like they're redoing the SW fighter vs fighter game (I can't remember the title of the damned thing, but it played like Silent Death as I recall from the deep mists of time).

With pre painted minis as well, should be interesting to see what scale and how it plays.

That was it. I've got a feeling I've got a scanned copy of it somewhere. And I've got some prepainted ships from the Star Wars Miniature ships thingie. I really should bust it out at some point.

If they make it classic trilogy and include the core fighters from the X-wing vs Tie fighter games it'll be great.

If they make it about the same scale as the WOTC fighters or only a little bigger they can still include things like freighters or patrol ships.

 :) :D

I believe the appropriate exclamation is "Woo!" and furthermore "Hoo!"....

Only came across Star Warriors a couple of months ago when a friend and I were saying 'wouldn't it be great if there was an X-Wing board game?'

I'm just saying that it's highly effective and I strongly recommend using it.
