Any plans for a reprint/rerelease?

Postby ckwalsh » Sun Oct 27, 2013 3:59 am

I've never played Paranoia, but it was brought to my attention by my Fiance who had heard of the game elsewhere and has been wanting to play. I figured it would make a pretty good Christmas gift, but I can't seem to find the books anywhere, without paying an arm and a leg.

Are there any plans to re-release the the rulebooks, or at least the Troubleshooters book (I think that's the starting book, right?).

I want to give you my money, I really do!

That's what a commie mutant traitor would say. But DriveThruRPG doesn't even have a section for Paranoia anymore. I don't believe commie mutant traitors. :p

Still crossing my fingers for some sort of announcement, or at least a funsize hintlet, ahead of the Annual Festive Capitalism Appreciation Drive :)

Same here! I discovered Paranoia a few weeks ago and I have been craving to play with my friends. I failed to get my hands on the 25th Edition by any means I could think of. I searched the Internet, asked the Role-Playing Association at my former College, visited many libraries, and even wrote to a specialized store in my city. All I managed to get is a PDF of the XP -err- I mean, 2004 Edition. Thanks to the Infrared Market. I'm almost done reading it, but I sure would love to have an official book and accessories.

Hail The Computer!

Friend citizen! I see from your ME card you are from CAN sector. Friend Computer tells me that Sentry Box had a couple of copies of Troubleshooters: http://www.sentrybox.com/games/games.html (I sure hope such links aren't treasonous...) Use the code word "Role Playing [M] -> PARANOIA XP RPG".

I also was looking for Paranoia books; then came across Sentry Box via a SE thread on 'where to find out of print source books' and they were literally the only place I could find a physical copy* before a friend in another city helpfully picked me up a copy of Troubleshooters from his FLGS. Of course, due to Sod's Law after he did that I managed to nab a copy of Black Missions on eBay... you may have some luck there too!

* Some kindly soul generously also supplied me with XP version PDFs. You know who you are and thank you again. Always Valuable!

For his outstanding devotion in making Alpha Complex a better place, and for his selfless acts of kindness toward his fellow citizens, HPD&MC is glad to broadcast this month's HOOC honoree:

You're too kind, citizen :) I didn't know FC awarded such badges!
(that's very cool, is there a generator for such things?)
Thank you very much, citizen!
My pleasure! While I'm at it: R&D services in OTT section of CAD sector have developed yet another tool that might come in handy for DMing- this one might even not explode! (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1470156778/wipebook - I am unconnected except for backing; you may have seen it if you frequent /r/rpg)

I can sure see how this prototype of ultravioletboard notebook could be useful at GM-in. Thank you for share this. As for the badge, I used Photoshop to make it. I unfortunately am not aware of any generator of the sort, though it could be an interesting project to develop!

Nice badge, Alek_cendre_91. Permission granted to borrow and adapt for my own use? :)

Well we're now in 2014, let's hope this is a good Year 214 for the Paranoia line. It's the 30th anniversary of the game, after all...

Happiness Officer Mars-R-BAR-5 here. Need a pep talk to keep this mission on track? I ran Paranoia at Marmalade Dog Gaming Convention today. Troubleshooters took on "Mission: Tube Jam" out of the Citizen's Guide to Alpha Complex (the Free RPG Day 2009 release). Every time I run Paranoia people just love it. It's soo, soo good for running at gaming conventions. Please keep stirring the food vats and let us know when we can expect some fresh Hot Fun to sluice down the pipes!

PS. Paranoia GM'ing pro tip: either swap table numbers when your players aren't looking or change the table number at registration and then hassle your players about reporting to the wrong briefing table. Especially effective if you show up late! For setting the mood and reinforcing GM infallibility it works like a charm.

If we're on the subject, I ran Mister Bubbles several weeks back, at the local (Mongoose-hosted) games club. Lots of silliness coupled with lots of paranoid behavior, which from players who had barely any knowledge of the game was most impressive - they jumped in with gusto, passed loads of notes around and gleefully stabbed each other in the back, again and again - and as it was my first attempt at GMing in some years, very pleased.

Anyway there was a lot of interest in the game, from the players and passers-by, as well as me... hoping to hear good Paranoia news soon!

...aaaand now High Programmers is out of stock too!

Pen-and-paper RPGs that aren't Dungeons and Dragons are a niche within a niche, and the market is probably smaller than it was even ten years ago (anyone remember how glorious the first relaunch was, with a supplement nearly every month?), I know all this but it's still sad to see my favourite game "resting" like this. Fingers and traitorous mutant tentacle appendages are crossed for some news soon.

Even Commies have to rest sometimes :)

Don't worry, Paranoia is not going away permanently. Far from it.

Yet the supplements were eventually canned most people preferred missions instead. Hence why the second relaunch focused mostly on releasing missions (with all fluff stuffed within the main rulebook).

And for those dedicated fans who did buy the supplements, there were enough mission ideas in there that would give GMs enough inspirations to make their own stuff instead of relying on Mongoose Publishing. So in a sense, the supplements were self-defeating. The glorious flame would have burnt out.

I'd argue you could do the same with the published missions though - mix and match content to make your own missions - the only difference if you were plundering supplements rather than plundering missions is that the content was easier to locate in the supplements :)

I think the 2004 edition was pretty close to being "functionally complete" at the finish (we never got the Sectorbook or an Outdoors supplement but that's about it, gapwise) which I liked from a gamer perspective, though obviously it doesn't help keep sales up!

The only thing I didn't like about the 2004 edition was that the layout, typesetting, proofing etc. were inferior to the 1980s version... but still better than the 25th anniverary edition! I do hope this trend is reversed for the next release :D

But the content itself was gold. The 2004 edition is my go-to Paranoia ruleset. Look at that tiny font size. Feel the information density!

I'm interested in this game. I hope to find out soon if it will be a reprint or a redux.
