Any Future Plans for Paranoia?

Postby Ahrimanius » Wed Aug 01, 2012 10:35 am

It has been rather quite around Paranoia recently
Are their any plans for upcoming products?

I also noticed some products like High Programmers are no longer available from the mongoose store and the other 2 corebooks and GM Screen are in the Sale/OOP Sale Section?

Whats the Deal :)

Hmmm. Given the ready availability of the 2004 edition second-hand, and the relatively low sales of the non-Troubleshooter elements of the 2009 edition... maybe the game is functionally complete and should be left to rest for a while, from both a business and quality-level perspective? I'd love the game to get more attention, but more low-selling supplements is not the way to do it.

I know what *I* would do, supplement-wise, but then I don't have several years of bloodthirsty experience in the RPG market so my opinion may not be valid... ;)
One supplement a year full of mini adventures, drop-in locations, bits and bobs of content from previous editions that has yet to be reused, et cetera. An Annual, if you will, in the spirit of Acute Paranoia.

This "splatbook" approach works great with Paranoia where, in all honesty, you don't need massively long adventures / location books, since fine-grained detail is not really part of the game. But a yearly book of goodies to drop into ongoing games... oh and of course to include content for the Internal Security and High Programmer sublines to drive a few more sales... maybe even interviews/opinion pieces from some of the games designers, GM staging tips and so on.
If a commitment to one supplement a year could be made, I think this would be the path to take.

Possible names for such a series:
The Paranoia Annual (keeping it simple!)
Chronic Paranoia (a reference to Acute, natch)
The Incomprehensium
Chapter Redacted (with a polite not to Games Workshop's legal department)

I really ought to finish the three half-complete Signs & Portents submissions I'm still tinkering with and respectfully submit them for consideration :) Actually that's another thing that could be included, stuff that was only in S&P before, or stuff still in the queue pending the eventual relaunch.

The answer to the original question is... yes.

We have a little something in the works at the moment that, if it all comes together (and we will know within a month or two, perhaps), will start appearing early 2013, and be all kinds of awesome :)

Will say more when I know more!

The news is that Famous Game Designer Gareth Hanrahan and his wife had twin boys a couple of months ago. I speculate he will be ready to return to PARANOIA when the boys enter middle school, or possibly earlier if we're fortunate.

2014 will be the 30th anniversary of Paranoia.
214 is (always) the year in Alpha Complex.

It strikes me that would be a great year for some new Paranoia material...

I see we're down to just two hardcopy books available to purchase from the Mongoose webstore, and only the odd 2004-edition PDF available at drivethru. And 2(0)14 is getting closer. I await announcements with great interest

I am guessing that Gareth Hanrahan's fathering twins has impacted significantly on the putative 2013 Paranoia plans (as well as Gareth's entire existence... my kids were born two years apart and that was pretty epic upheaval!)...

I'm in a very Paranoid mood right now - preparing to GM my first game in years early next month. I would be delighted to exchange my credits for Mongoose goods and services!

I'd joke about the Alpha Complex Computer threatening the people at Mongoose Publishing being branded as traitors if they tried to publish a new version of the Paranoia RPG.

Very soon - all the ducks are pretty much in a row, and we are now just discussing what, how and when to tell you chaps :)

The need for patience is coming to an end...

Another duck has waddled up and is now in step with the others.

You can now expect information to start flowing at the beginning of next month (mainly because World Famous Games Designers are on their summer holidays this month!).

I've heard about Paranoia for years, but have never played it, and I want to run a game for my regular group...After frantically searching for Troubleshooters books in English that are less than $600 or £100 online, I'm glad to see that *something* is in the works, and now that September is here, is there any new news? :D
