Refits - Let's Sort Them Out!

Postby msprange » Wed Aug 01, 2018 3:04 pm

Hi guys,

Okay, one thing I think we can nail with a decent discussion... Refits.

Specifically, whether we should include points values for all of them.

My feelings on this have been stated in the playtest packs - that they should be 'locked' from 'tournament' style games, and used only for historical battles because a) they add a fair level of complexity/opaqueness from the standard fleet lists and b) properly balancing them is going to be a lifetime's work. We can get 'close enough', but I am not sure that is the road to go down.

So, I would like comments!

Do you firmly feel they should be included with points for competitive play, or do you think competitive play should have a 'tighter' set of options (Crew Quality, incidentally, follows this route too)?

Let me know what you think...

We pretty much play straight battles at a set level. We don't worry about dates. So I think it would be better to lock them off from tournament play and keep them strictly for historical games.

Balance the ships for pick up games and tourneys.

Just to add, I'd be quite happy without the breakdowns of different ships under each class. As an extreme example, under Admiralty Scott-class there are 7 variations.
Adding a few points of damage to a battleship makes next to no difference. An extra dice or two of AA or even light guns makes little to no difference. If the differences are big enough, give them a separate entry.

Foe example the Queen Elizabeth battleships are split into 3. This is fine, the differences are enough to warrant that. But even the Malaya has a tiny variation - and frankly three entries is enough.

I really like the refits, they are great for historical battles.

Not sure why you dont want to use them for tournaments, as long as the points reflect the upgrades its fine

Also adds depth to the rules , dont drop them Matt

As mentioned before the air groups for carriers through out the war is something i would like to see other wise gamey players will load up their essex class with the best aircraft regardless of year

my 2 pennies worth :)

Just to clarify, we are not looking at dropping the Refits, just the points values attached to them.

As for Air Groups, that is something we are looking at :)

I’d still really like to see points for refits, even if only advisory ones. Playing V@S1 campaign it always felt the Germans needed the Scharnhorst sisters with 15” guns to be competitive against the RN.
