If you could have one non OS ship, what would it be?

Postby Zarathustra Suicune » Wed May 15, 2013 10:24 pm

If Mongoose were given permission to produce a model for one non Original series ship for some reason, what would you like to see? I'd love to see an Enterprise B myself.
If this is a bit risky due to overzealousness on Paramounts part, then I apologise, I am just interested to see if for some reason (unlikely as anything to happen in reality sadly) that Mongoose could do a single ship from beyond the OS period, what would people like to see?

I think the only one other ship I'd like to see would be the Klingon Bird of Prey.

Definitely a vor'cha or a negh'var. The biggest problem with the entire Klingon fleet right now is everything looks the frigging same. Even after months of painting and using a fleet, I can't tell most of the classes apart. And I'm usually pretty good at that sort of thing.

Enterprise-class (Constitution-class refit) or the Reliant.

If we were to include non-television/movie ships, the Chandley-class frigate and Romulan Winged Defender from the old FASA game.

Reliant for me too...

If we were to expand it from there, I would love to see the FASA Larson and Loknar classes, as well as the "fan" Surya class (as a proto-REliant, rather than the Anton from FASA). One gripe I have about SFB is I feel there should be a few more "hull" designs, especially for the Feddies.

It was explained as a matter of logistics, commonality of parts and ease of construction and repair. I'd hate to be the Quartermaster trying to supply parts and repairs to a plethora of different Fed ship designs. In the real world if one is smart, one tries to minimize one's logistics difficulties, since logistics is frequently what really decides wars, not tactics. :)

While I understand this, I think this would apply to equipment and systems, rather than hulls. IMHO if the hull needs replacement, might as well just build a new ship...

I know everyone that hasn't "grown-up with Star Fleet Battles" gets tired of hearing it, but you have to remember that the SFU was designed by a real-life engineer and that ACTASF doesn't exist in a vacuum.

The originally released Federation ships consisted of three different saucers (Frigate, Cruiser, Dreadnought), two different hulls (cruiser and dreadnought), and three different warp engines (Frigate, Cruiser, and Dreadnought).
The various ships were simply different combinations of these "off the shelf" parts.

Not so much to facilitate repair, but because of economic issues. If all you're making are three different saucers, you can mass produce them quickly and efficiently. And having standardized parts makes it easy to upgrade ships from one version to the next... which is crucial in Federation and Empire.

But to get back on topical...
If I could go beyond the original series for a single ship only - I'd want the movie era refit Enterprise.

I want That Ship featured in Star Trek Into Darkness. I'm just saying...

I actually have many of the ships mentioned on this topic. They were featured in the FASA version for their ship combat suppliment. FASA produced a lot of minis for it both Paramount movie designs and their own as the game had a construction system. They were the good example of a game with FAR too many designs and it may have been part as to the game being unplayable if you wanted minis too. We who regularly played Star Trek minis combat tried for a time but stuck with Star Fleet Battles.

The NX-1 class would make a dandy Early Years Frigate.

True. But the shape of that saucer/nacelle/whatever is defined by the primary equipment (i.e. the stuff which takes up appreciable proportions of the space) fits inside it.

Common saucer section means common life support arrays, bulkhead spars, turbolifts, etc, etc, which do get replaced after damage.

Whilst you could use the same systems in a different shaped hull, in one or the other you must not be 'packing' them in such a way as to make the best use of space.

Frigate Saucer, Cruiser Hull, Dreadnought Engines?
Understand that I'm not advocating violence.
I'm just saying that it's highly effective and I strongly recommend using it.

Tri-engined Enterprise-D from all good things. Between the third engine and the Mauler Cannon, the proportions look right on that model.
