Donno...maybe? Frankly, I wish we'd get that posting he was promising instead of letting us dangle.

Nope. At least not 'round these parts (and that would include players AND shop owners).

I'm going to wait until I know a little more. This news caught me as off-guard (probably more so!) as everyone else. I was as happy as a clam, working on all kinds of SST:WOTS stuff...and now this? Hmmm. Matt is correct, however: a BAD business decision or decisions need to be corrected if a company is to survive. If the mini range wasn't profitable, then it SHOULD have been sh*t-canned. What SHOULD have happened is water over the dam now: MGP are making hard decisions in order to continue operations.

What are my initial reactions? Shock. Disappointment. And, yes, Betrayal. But again, I know only what the rest of you know (plus what I saw during my visit). I am CERTAIN this was probably a hard decision, but if money coming in doesn't significantly exceed money going out a company will not survive for very long.

That having been said, I would like ALL of you guys and true friends of the SST game to watch this forum (and others) for my future posts: all is not necessarily lost...

Anyway, like I said, I'm going to wait until I know a little more.

Until I do, I will save any diatribe. But just in case, for all of you who are waiting for me to become completely un-glued...

Back in the day, our nuclear forces had a "counter surprise system" that would enable us to get nukes in the air on short notice. This was beyond the DEFCONs you always hear about (which took a long time to implement). If the sh*t hit the fan quickly, we could skip the DEFCONs upon authority and go to war condition in as little as five minutes. There were certain "pro-words" that would be declared, one of which meant "Ready to Launch."

Scipio declares SNAP COOKIE.

I'll be checking back then. I was planning to run a big SST game and the SST/BF:Evo Zombie mod someone put out at a local convention in June. I'll still be doing that.

My fledgling B5 stuff will be dumped however since I only started getting interested this past summer. I'm too heavily invested into SST (physically and mentally) and pretty much have the figures I need, and then some.

Bubba:

Can I assume that you approve of my idea and are willing to do some graphics? Without pay? (Hmmm...that sounds like MGP!) Just joking on that...

Better yet...are you willing to do graphics and we'll talk???

I declare a Broken Arrow. So there. :P

Well, let's see what Matt has in mind for us. This could be interesting, folks. Countdown to warp... "5! 4! Ready! Steady! Go!" (really bad, eh???) :P

If this was a ride at Disneyland, we could at least take home a photo...

G'Day

Last time with the promise of something wonderful on the horizon I spent approx $AUS100 buying the two army books and invasion supplement. Then SST:EVO happened. This time before Christmas as a bit of a present my wife Beth let me clean out the local store of it's SST stock, $AUS300 later and I'm quietly waiting for the SST:WOTS release and now this happens.

And to cap it off Matt Sprange is still dangling out a morsel for the mugs who still might hold out hope.
The other blow, of course, is that we also have to pull away from Starship Troopers - however, I'll be dropping by the SST forum soon with something that might make SST players a great deal happier. More on that soon.
I remember a comment posted to 'The Miniatures Page' before SST was first released, the poster referred to the upcoming game and MGP hype as 'VAPOUR-WARE'. How right that poster was.

Sorry Matt I've waited patiently. I'm a paying customer and your company has strung me along twice now, there won't be a third time.

Maybe it has something to do with miniatures doing loss for company, RPG's doing profit...

Or do you think Mongoose is doing this for charity out of their own pocket money?

Had to blow the dust off my user name for this.

Anyho, after almost what? Two years of broken promises, I can't say I'm surprised. Disappointed yes, but not surprised.

Which is sad, I loved this game and enjoyed the hell out of it while I could.

Guess its time to write the eulogy and lay her to rest. :(

RPGs ARE doing problems. Maybe not exactly for MGP, but the RPG market in general has a REALLY big problem.
Just look at all these RPG companies going down over the last years. Fanpro is gone (they gave up all their RPGs), White Wolf has massive problems (though they created them theirselves), Feder und Schwert got problems, too (gave up WoD). Pegasus can just afford keeping RPGs because they earn themselves a golden nose with things like munchkin and zombies and appeararently Cthullu is always doing well.
I know the RPG community because I am involved in it (actually wirting on a yet very popular though not even released RPG) and I can tell you it's a dying community.
You must be more than lucky to dig up a Convention that has more than 200 visitors these days. Many conventions in my area already gave up.

Of course this is caused by many factors (no new players, companies getting stuck to the old horses and not bringing up the courage to try something REALLY new, laziness of old players, D20-mania, no need for ANOTHER new Edition of XY, lack of advertise and some others), but at the end of the day it doesn't look that good for RPGs these days.

In my opinion, the biggest problem is that RPGs and wargames are having to compete with PC and video games. You buy a complete product with a single payment, can play by yourself, with your friends or hook up online and most products give you hundreds of hours of entertainment.

It's sad because I like the spectacle of a table top battle and the social aspect of RPGs and wargames, but they've had their time in the sun and I think will continue to fade.

As far as the end of the mini lines for ACTA and SST, I saw it coming. Miniatures just aren't the thing Mongoose does well. I admire the challenge Matt set himself - cheaper, high quality minis - but it turns out that GW have been playing fair all this time. If you want something more than half decent that will be supported and will endure, you have to pay for it. Just simple economics.

Sigh. Sincerity and effort do not a succesful business make, not when expertise and sheer luck are lacking anyways...

I personally strongly doubt Mongoose will be coming back to minis business in 2009. With all the negativity they've garnered, and I can't say "entirely undeservedly" at this point, I certainly wouldn't bother. If they do and can make it work, kudos to them obviously.

Frankly I now must speculate as to the long term survival of the company as a whole... they are obviously taking protective measures to survive by abandoning a whole market. That does not suggest good times ahead.

I don't think we will ever see Mongoose return to mini's if we do, I'd say 2010 or 11, or 12...

Probablly when they think they can do prepaints again (sigh)

In the mean time I want to get my mits on these new rules and army lists to see if they are at all worthwhile.
