Ran a Star Trek ACTA game Friday night.

Postby JohnL5555 » Sat Sep 08, 2007 5:00 am

Ed was able to come by tonight. I had been wanting to try out Mongoose's Bab 5 rules. I just didn't want to use them for B5. I already have Starmada. I wanted to try either Battlestar Galactica or Star Trek. My BSG ships weren't done so the decision was easier! :-)

I used my large scale Star Trek ships (1/2500 scale). The largest ship was the Klingon Vor'cha at @ 12-13 inches long. Most ships are 6-8 inches long. Looks pretty nice. The Federation had 3 Miranda's, 1 Constellation (Stargazer which I scratchbuilt), 1 Excelsior and 1 Ambassador Class ship. The Klingons had 2 K'tinga's (upgraded D-7's), 2 K'vort Birds of Prey and 1 Vor'cha.

The scneraio was set during the Klingon Civil War. The Bor'tas faction was trying to bring a small fleet thru the tip of Romulan space (they were allied to the Romulans). The other Klingon faction under Gow'ron was allied more or less towards the federation. The Fed's were patrolling this part of space. Their mission was to force the Klingon's to turn back by whatever means were needed.

Both fleets started at opposite corners of the tabletop. The advanced towards each other. The Klingons had the 2 K'vort's and 2 K'tinga's as seperate squadrons. The Vor'cha was by itself.

The Federation had the Miranda's combined with the Constellation into 2 squadrons. The Excelsior and the Ambassador were individuals.

The two larger ships for each side were deployed in the middle. The lighter ships on each flank. The Excelsior trailed a little behind the Ambassador. I found out pretty quickly that Miranda's are nasty. They quickly destroyed 1 K'tinga and several hammered the other over a few turns. The K'tinga's did some damage to one of the Mirandas.

The other flank saw one of my Birds of Prey lose its shields and take some harsh damage over 3 or so turns from his other Miranda, the Constellation and Excelsior. The only real bright spot was that my Vor'cha finally stripped the shields from the Ambassador. However, it had a Hull 6 so was still pretty tough. The game ended up with the Klingon's turning about since I had lost 1 K'tinga and had another K'tinga and a K'vort ready to die. The Feds had some decent damage on 1 ship a little on another. I could have probably have taken out the Ambassadior in another turn but likely would have seen my Vor'cha flagsjip destroted as a result.

Fun game, lasted less than 2 hours. I did have a couple of questions.

1. Do you roll against the ever changing shield level as it takes damage OR do you stay with the number that the ship started with at the beginning of the turn?

2. When you have more AD that the shield level how exactly is damage allocated?

Liked the rules and variant a lot!

Thanks,

John

Sound very cool. Where did you get the ST models? I've seen different ones posted around the web, but I can't find a reliable site that has their general descriptions and pictures so I know what I'm buying. I'm not a huge ST fan, but there are some select models I'd love to get, just for my personal collection. Maybe a "counts as" fleet among friends.

An example: the USS Hypothetical, Hull 4, current shields 5.

It is hit by an enemy disruptor, 10AD.

Roll the AD, 6 hit. The shield stops 5 hits, shield is reduced to 0, roll the remaining hit on the attack table as normal.

The following turn, it's shield is again 5. It is hit by a a heavy disruptor, 6AD AP Double damage. It scores 4 Hits. The shield stops 3 hits (each hit reduces the shield by 2, any additional damage is ignored) and is reduced to 0 One hit gets through, roll on the attack table, doing double damage.

Great battle report. Can I just ask which set of ACTA Trek rules you used?
There's been a couple of different attempts (best of which, IMHO) are phoenixhawk's.

Cheers

We used to play a star trek game years ago using micro machine minies, and adapted rules from gw's old game space fleet (the grand daddy of battlefleet gothic ) and it worked really well. I still have the minis somewhere.
These pretzels are making me thirsty!!!

Thanks for the help. They are indeed Phoenix Hawk's variant.

They are available at the Mongoose Mods yahoo group. Go here:

If a member go here directly:

The ships are AMT/Ertel. They have been recently rereleased. I found them online and at my local hobby store. They run from 12-15 dollars a box (three ships). Two are Federation sets. The first is the TOS Enterprise, Enterprise A and Galaxy class. The second set has the Ambassador class, Excelsior and Sovereign. The adverseriers set has a Romulan (TNG) Wrabird, Klingon K'vort Bird of Prey and Ferengi Marauder. The other TOS adversaries set has a D-7 (I use as a K'tinga), TOS Romulan Bird of Prey and Enterprise (TOS). These are actually @ 1/1600 were as the others are closer to 1/2500. It looks ok to me, though.

Thanks,

John

Thanks for the help. However, I am confused as Phoenix Hawks' rule says to roll 3 AD against the shields for each AD and IF successful reduce the shield by 1. That's why I was confused.

Thanks,

John

Great minis.

Is there a way I could still to get some of the minis?
Admirals do not ask for command, they have it.

well they haven't been in production for many years, so your best bet is to monitor Ebay, I suppose.

Oh, okay. That was the second edition shield rule I quoted.

Your best bet in all honsety is to have a look on ebay for 'Star Trek Micro Machines' they did a fairly extensive range and are generally quite cheap, though some of the rarer ones tend to end up going for a fair bit for what your paying sadly :(

There is a game call Federation Commander, there are plenty of minis for it. It is only TOS so the new ships are not there, they are OK priced but there should be not problems getting the minatures.
