What was so special about it that it warrented that action well before Clark and his friends seize power?
To spy on aliens. Especially the Minbari.

When the Centauri Emporer was dying, they left him in the care of B5, even though his personal cruiser (which undoubtedly had a full medical suite aboard) was just a five minute shuttle ride away. Later, when Delenn is stabbed by the Nightwatch, she is treated in Medlab while three Minbari cruisers orbit the station. If these other races thought they had superior medical facilities, wouldn't they have insisted on using them? Later, Franklin and and an th medical facility are chosen to do the studies on interspecies cross contamination risks for the entire Interstellar Alliance.

Earth may be backwards in many ways, but medicine does not appear to be one of them.
It's not nessecarialy Earth tech but the B5 facilities. Certainly the xeno reasearch was specifically there because of the number of races who went through.

I agree, no matter the ship you are on, unless it's a hospital ship, is going to have the same extensive facilities that a fully operational station can provide. That's why soldiers and sailors are removed from their ships or places of duty (ie. field hospitals) in order to provide greater care for them. Well, that and to get them out in order to make more room for more patients.
Yummmmm.....Flan! It's really just styrofoam. Tasty styrofoam, like twinkies, but somehow better for you.
