What does the Conan RPG need?

Discuss Mongoose RPGs here, such as the OGL rulebooks, Jeremiah, Armageddon 2089 and Macho Women with Guns

What does the Conan RPG need?

Postby Nyarlathotep » Tue Apr 10, 2007 12:32 pm

A little different from the usual "request threads" : What do you folks think the Conan Rpg really needs?

A Kingdom/City Sourcebook?

An Adventure or Campaign?

Another multipurpose character book?

Something completely different?

And if so... why?

I would say first to complete the circuit of resource books for the various kingdoms ie. Cimmeria, Asgard and Vanaheim, Koth, Ophir, Nemedia, Brythunia, Corinthia, Hyperborea etc. Many of these could, and probably should, be combined (North Kingdoms, Hyborian Heartland, etc.)

Next a book of adventures, including a sampling of session a GM could run from various locales. I know there are some screaming for a campaign out there but I beleive a book of minor adventures would be of more use to more GMs.

A book of small adventures would be a great idea; really fits with REH's writings. Some more region bookswould be nice too: The North, Turan/Hyrkania, Central Hyboria, etc.

A revised "Magic" book would be nice. Even though the spells in Conan RPG do not have levels like in D20, they sort of do with their prerequisites. Scholar builds can be down-right frustrating sometimes.

Some more reigonal sourcebooks like Stygia et al
-Vhendya
-Turran/Hyrkania
-Khitai/far east
-Kush/black kingdoms
-Cimmeria/Asgard/Vanheim/Hyperboria/northern kingdoms
-Nemedia

A big 1-20 mega-campaign. Mongoose has done this before with Slane RPG and the Drow War. They should do it with Conan.

Absent that, more adventures, always more adventures.

A bestiary (at long last...)

And for everything.... good quality maps in the books

Later.
Yeah, well things are tough all over cupcake, and it rains on the just and the unjust alike...

... except in Califorina.

I agree with the need for more regional sourcebooks, starting with Turan/Hyrkania and Ophir/Koth.

To be more specific, I would love to see Turan/Hyrkania, Vendhya and Black Kingdoms (in that order). Then - adventures, adventure-packs, campaigns and more adventures. And a map-pack. And a bestiary with lots of human foes. And Hyborian Empires. And... :)

Thats a great idea! A compendium of NPCs from various cultures in a spread of experience levels. (1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th, 10th etc.)

Exactly. I don't need a monster compendium (on average I use less than 1 monster per adventure) but I hate creating mooks in d20.

Finaryvn put up this taxonomy of how a gameline works back in January.
Phase I -- the creation of the core rulebook. This is probably the biggest selling product of any line, and the one that the casual gamer is most likely to buy even if he doesn't pursue the remander of the product line.

Phase II -- the creation of sourcebooks and adventures. Since Conan is set in a pre-determined world, there would be a pre-determined number of nation sourcebooks and only a certain degree of latitude to create new ones. Probably there is a heavy purchase for the first few, but diminishing sales as the line grows larger and larger.

Phase III -- addition of anything else to the setting. I would think that this is where we are now, and most of the "big sales" products have already been created a while ago. At this point we probably get a few adventures and modules, but there are few canon nations left to read about and a large part of the world has been developed to a decent degree. The campaign line sort of fizzles out even if the present gamers continue their campaigns at full speed.

So, in a sense Conan is "dying" because there isn't a lot more that needs to be developed.
Assuming that this is true regarding a game line:

We'll be going into Phase I again with the New Corebook - which will go by quickly.

So Phase I - New Corebook

Phase II - They've already announced Return to the Road of Kings and Some Sort of Beastiary.

What other products can be pushed into Phase II? Kingdom books like Aquilonia, Stygia, City Books like Messentia and Shadizar, and Customization Books like Hyboria's Fs will probably not be reprinted for 2nd edition.
