    Spicing Up Combat

One thing I have been considering is a rule they had in the Exalted RPG. It was called "stunt dice." If a player described his action in an interesting way they would be awarded extra dice by the GM for their dice pool. You'd get 1 dice for something like "I swing sword my at his head in a...

    Improved trip

You could change Demon killer to instead of ignoring terror saves against a demon type you have already defeated to you are considered to automatically pass any terror saves against demons you have already defeated. This means you get crimson mist automatically against demon types previously...

Who has actually played a prestige class?

I considered getting some levels in Poitanian Knight at some point but it just doesn't seem like its worth it in most ways. I think sticking with muticlassing Noble/Soldier just seems to make more sense though. The Gunderland mercenary class seems somewhat intriguing however, they seem to get...

    Improved trip

Well there is Demon Killer but that only gives you bonus' to will saves against terror (and makes you immune to the terror effect of specific demons you have defeated). There is also the monster slayer feat that doubles the power attack bonus against large creatures. I've always wondered with...

    NPC list

As promised (a bit delayed I know) The Nemedian Adventurer! It is mostly based on the stats in the free companies book, but those stats are for the Open Mass Combat system so this is just the completed version for RP stats: Nemedian Adventurer Race: Hyborian Class: Soldier 3 Hit Dice: 3d10+3...

    Social Skills (PC vs NPC)

I think social issues, whether they be skills, abilities or spells need to handled by a GM somewhat delicately. When at all possible the GM should let the PC think they are acting in their own interest (whether this is by rolling in secret and letting Characters "know" what their perceptions...

    Help with Literacy

While I agree I should not make broad generaliations about medieval literacy. It varied significantly both on chronology and geopgraphy (even in ancient cultures it varied based on geography, chronology and class). In the early middle ages during the reign of Charlemagne there was significant...

    Warrior's Companion - February 2009

I will admit I forgot about Fafrd (that Swords against death? Its been about been about 10 years since I read Leiber). I also think that more seroius injuries that requires some significant heal checks to get the character back up to snuff seems OK. The problem becomes when only super rare...

    Help with Literacy

I am afraid I would have disagree I think many of the more "barbaric" races may have a simple runic script (Ogham for the Cimmerians, Nordic runes for the Nordheimr) that are really more symbolic or religious than they are an actual written language. I also think illiteracy provides for some...

    NPC list

Thank you, it took far more time and effort than I had expected. When I posted this I was very tired and there are couple of things I should explain. First of these stats include a few house rules : all weapons that dealt 2d10 now deal 2d8, all weapons that dealt 2d8 now deal 2d6 and war...

    NPC list

well I have spent much more time on this than I thought I would but I got a little obsessive with regards to completeness so I apologize for the length of this one, its pretty much stats for every type of soldier a character is likely to encounter west of Turan: -Knights and Nobles- Aquilonian...

    New approach to Weapon Damage

With regards to the DR issue my group uses that optional minimum damage rule that says any blow that hits deals at least 1 point of damage. Admittedly this does not solve the problem but it does mitigate it a little.

    Warrior's Companion - February 2009

I agree emphatically, in fact in the sword & sorcery genre it seems the axiom "that which does not kill you makes you stronger" is something of a constant truth. In the literature Conan takes considerable punishment at the hands of his enemies (crucifixion, torture, beatings, wounded almost to...

    New approach to Weapon Damage

One thing we did in our game to reduce the amount of power with big 2-handed weapons was to decrease their die type by one. Weapons that dealt 2d10 now deal 2d8 and weapons that dealt 2d8 now deal 2d6. Its not a huge difference but it does make some of the bigger weapons a little less crazy...

    NPC list

A project came to me recently to create a list of low level NPCs for my GM so he has stats to reference for common foes without having to shuffle through various books or have to come up with something on the fly. I am putting up this post for 2 reasons: 1 to offer it to other GMs for their...

    Your Favourite Feats

I've always liked the intricate swordplay feat. It is pretty powerful as it gives a significant bonus to parry if you have a decent CHA, it adds to your STR bonus instead of replacing it. It is also reasonably balanced in the fact that it requires 3 prereq feats: weapon focus (broadsword or...

    Thoughts on Reputation

The way we play reputation is more or less as described in the 2nd Ed rulebook where players have a base reputation equal to their level plus their CHA bonus and social standing (with some miscellanious modifiers thrown in such as COH bonus, etc.). You also have situational/local bonuses for...

    Conan: Hyrkania and Turan

I believe our much admired Mr. Darlage wrote an S&P article on the Hyrkanians. It was less (meaning not a full book) than we could hope for but it bodes well for the future I believe...

    What your favorite Conan story?

The draft that I read ended at the point where Gault and the other frontiersmen ambush Valerian in the house and go off to track them into the wilderness. The last line I have from the draft I read is "the trail led into the wilderness." Other parts of the story may have been edited or...
