Re: Prime Directive Traveller

Title Any naval officer who commands a ship (titled commanding officer, or CO) is addressed by naval custom as "captain" while aboard in command. Officers with the rank of captain travelling aboard a vessel they do not command should be addressed by their rank and name (e.g., "Captain Smith"), but ...

Re: Prime Directive Traveller

It could be that the custom was purely a custom of the officers' mess etiquette on a number of ships... ...that would seem to provide a more believable answer and satisfy all of the sides! Wardroom/mess etiquette is one of those arcane mysteries that outsiders aren't supposed to understand fully! B...

Re: Prime Directive Traveller

And the quotes I gave DO mention them - I checked each before linking. I checked the first one again, and you're right, it does say so. But the reference given in the wiki article does not. Rather, it refers to the custom that the commanding officer of a ship is addressed as captain regardless of h...

Re: Prime Directive Traveller

Oh, I never said it was official - just an "unwritten rule" But it doesn't seem to be a US Marine tradition or Royal Marine tradition in the way Heinlein says it is a Mobile Infantry tradition and Pournelle says it's a Co-Dominium Marine tradition, etc. At most it's a tradition on some individual s...

Re: Prime Directive Traveller

I accidentally reposted a post that I was editing for grammar. I can't seem to find a way to delete this one again. Sorry.

Re: Prime Directive Traveller

In the Age of Sail the "rule of thumb" for the number of marines on a ship was something like "one gun, one marine", so the marine contingents usually were quite small - for example, only about 30 men on a typical frigate, usually not enough to spend the pay of a marine captain on their command. So...

Re: Prime Directive Traveller

The honorary Major rank is there to prevent confusion in the middle of battle - by calling him Major, a Marine rank, it eliminates the confusion. So does adding the name of the captain on those rare occasions when it might be relevant (Basically when both captains happen to issue contradictory orde...

Re: Prime Directive Traveller

Also, looking through those, don't forget fellas - when a Marine Captain is on board ship, he's granted a temporary "for the duration" promotion to Major... there can only be 1 Captain on a ship. :) That's a myth. That is to say, I've seen anecdotal evidence that it was practiced aboard the ships t...

Re: Prime Directive Traveller

PD and the SFU realize that it takes both officers and enlisted personnel to make a ship work. Why? You need ranks and a chain of command, but why shouldn't an organization be able to work perfectly fine without the arbitrary separation into two chains? Police and fire departments seem to manage ju...

Re: Prime Directive Traveller

Whether Rand was enlisted or not really depends on whether you go by Roddenberry's original intentions or by the rationalizations that later writers introduced retroactively. Since the nature of a retcon is to establish that the change it introduces is not a chance but that things always were like t...

Re: Prime Directive Traveller

Roddenberry did think of Starfleet as being composed of astronauts, so everybody aboard a starship was an officer. The enlisted men were introduced later. Miles O'Brien was New Era (and IIRC he had lieutenant's insignia at one point). Enterprise supposedly had a crew of 430. Though some of them seem...

Re: Prime Directive Traveller

It's been a long time since I watched any TOS episodes, but weren't there occasions when the redshirt was from Science Division? By which I mean that his narrative function was to demonstrate to the main characters how dangerous the Danger of the Week was? Contrariwise (and bringing this back to gam...

Re: Character Generation CheckList

This is a purely personal opinion, so please don't take it for anything more. When running convention scenarios, I've found that the time it takes players to create characters is much better spent gaming. Using pre-generated characters saves time and has the added advantage that you can make sure th...

Survival would probably be higher if serving on a ship where they used more reasonable landing procedures. You, know, first beam down a sizable heavily armed security team in combat armor to secure a perimeter, THEN beam down the Away Team (then stay in sight of the others and don't wander off on y...

Re: Retrofit Times

There are some figures in Trillion Credit Squadron. I think it was 10% of original construction time for a minor repair/refit and 25% for a major repair/refit. This is from memory, though, and may be wrong.

Re: High Guard irregularity...

So Mongoose is changing 'Navigation' (among the stars) to 'Astrogation'? That's one change I thoroughly approve of. I've always thought it a no-brainer to distinguish between navigating wet navy ships across oceans and starships between stars. As one of my NPCs puts it: "Astrogator! I'm an astrogato...

Re: The Rescue - Where Is Mariposa

In one of the adventures for Traveller in Signs & Portents there's an adventure called The Rescue which is set on a city on the moon of Sahal orbriting a planet called Mariposa. But I'm having a hard time finding Mariposa on any of the Traveller star maps so if the PC's decide to leave I can't tell...

Re: Sword World OOB

4 worlds are building feets for the 5W, but they wont be in space until 1107. Every Sword World maintains a navy of its own. Gram, Narsil, and Sacnoth all have populations in the billions, allowing them to maintain LARGE navies. When the Confederation mobilized for the upcoming 5FW, the member nati...
