Re: OK, a potential grognard hate fest awaits with this ques
The core rules assume that a mortgage lasts for "480 months (40 years)". So 12 months to a year. The Spinward Marches book details the Imperium's dating system as being a 7 day week and a 365 day year. This leaves you pretty buggered if you need to know the exact day a payment is due. I find it slig...

Re: art, layout, and the electronic medium
I don't think flicking back and forth is any more difficult than a PDF? You can flick forward or back at most a few pages before the fast scroll, search function, or table of contents is consulted. In this respect PDF's and eBooks are the same. I don't think it's fair to expect everyone to use an A4...

Re: Overall Physical design and art.
My computer isn't state of the art (it's a mid 2012 mac book pro with 8 gig ram) but it's not that bad yet still it takes more time to turn the pages in the full version PDF using Preview than I'd like. I've not tried it with Adobe Reader but Preview tends to work well enough for most things (thoug...

art, layout, and the electronic medium
Just thought I would add my two credits on the new direction in art/layout. I think that many of the complaints and divisions have their root in some key differences between the dead tree product and the PDF in actual use. The full colour gloss of the new edition is going to be fantastic in print. I...

Re: Leasing spacecraft in Traveller
The Imperium embraces free market forces. The fixed ship prices in the books would appear to be at odds with this, but remember that these are "fresh off the line" prices. A party starting out IMO is unlikely to be purchasing a brand new ship, let alone designing one. This does not preclude them own...

Re: Leasing spacecraft in Traveller
One thing is that starship leases are probably going to be a lot more difficult to get in the Traveller universe. 1) People do not just lease a Boeing 777 (or a Airbus A380 or whatever) and decide to fly off with it because they don't want to continue paying for it and mostly or totally get away wi...

Re: Leasing spacecraft in Traveller
 Why? I lease cars and they are brand new same year models. Now if you bought an old ship that had been a lease I could see this, but not for a new lease. Because it's CHEAP :) The OP's concern was the crippling expenses imposed by a ship's mortgage. Comparisons to "real life" are a bit diff...

Re: Leasing spacecraft in Traveller
I would also make sure the ship is very much a "rental". About 70 years old with thousands of parsecs on the clock. Probably had the manouver drive replaced and jerry-rigged so it doesn't work quite right (constantly veers up and to the left), Only one side of the cargo bay doors work, and one of th...

Re: Leasing spacecraft in Traveller
Yeah a % of the base value of the ship would be the way to go. What % you pay would be some sort of market rate. Landlords (shiplords?) need a reasonable rate of return you know. One thing you might do is along the lines of what retail landlords do here in Australia - which is force you to throw you...

Re: What's to become of Mercenary 2nd Ed?
Certainly some of the ideas in Merc II made their way into the new core rules. At some point I would like to revisit Mercenary and really expand the idea of a dedicated mercenary-based campaign. However, I must be at pains to point out, there are no set plans to do so. Mercenary is not in the core ...

What's to become of Mercenary 2nd Ed?
Now that there is a second edition of the core rules coming, what's to become of Mercenary 2nd ed?
Was it produced with the new core book in mind? Will it need a touch-up?
Will the core supplements be "prettyfied" like the new core book is?

It's also an opportunity for dramatic moments.ShawnDriscoll wrote:Heck, not everyone has a starship with air-raft or hover-car they've had much practice with. See Ripley from ALIEN. Deckards are rare in sci-fi.

Re: Skill oddness.
One I would like to see used more is "Drive or Flyer". With the clearly large number of Air Rafts it would seem like more people would know how to "fly" them. Just a thought. One thing that many "modern" *makes finger quote gesture* games do is say that certain things are just common knowledge. Lik...

Re: Ship's computer
I must say, I've never thought of looking at ship intellect the same way as personal scale intellect (i e let it use expert programs up to its rating, which in this case is 10) but I really like the way you think :) It's for an adventure inspired by "The Mad Ship" by Robin Hobb (a fantasy novel). I...

Re: Ship's computer
Though I don't know why anyone would use the MCr1, rating 10 starship Intellect program when they can use the Cr100, Rating 1 Intelligence Interface normal computer program. See this here is why I am confused. It seems really odd that something like the ability to issue voice commands would have su...

Ship's computer
So I am messing with the core rules and trying to design a ship that pretty much "flys itself". As in, it has the full kit in regards to automation software for the various roles on board. I have two dilemmas here - 1. The Intellect program on the ship is rating 10 and it says this gives the ship th...

Re: A New Edition of Traveller
Awwwww..... I was hoping there would be a print product I could buy.
What sort of pricing are we talking for the finished (printed) product?
Will there be an A5 softcover like Legend has?
