Re: Difficulty, Boon/Bane, and DMs

Thanks, Stainless. I was getting to the point of questioning my sanity with where the debate was heading. At least somebody recognises the point I was making - and that is all I want, basically. Yes, it is a stylistic issue but the point is raised, nevertheless. EDIT: Just read this comment made by ...

Apples and oranges is all. Two different die mechanics. Two different reasons for adding such die rolls to new editions.
What are those reasons, precisely?

And another pointless remark from you. Do you actually read anybody else's posts here before you respond to them?

Re: Difficulty, Boon/Bane, and DMs

I'm criticising the mechanic as it stands, not suggesting a new one. The suggestion I made in the other thread was to simply remove boon/bane from the core, and present it as an optional rule in the Companion when it's been thought out a bit. My view is that it can then get discussed fully about how...

Re: Difficulty, Boon/Bane, and DMs

The burden of proof is on you. Make a video describing your case. That is an absolutely worthless thing to say. It doesn't address the point in the slightest and lowers the tone of this playtest. Fine. Debate in the forum then if you won't do a video. I already know what your mechanic will look lik...

Re: Difficulty, Boon/Bane, and DMs

Those are hard-wired DMs. Not player-added DMs. That's the point, Shawn. There shouldn't be any 'hard-wired DMs' in the rules. They should be subsumed into either a set difficulty level or boon/bane dice. Having them there undermines the point of having variable difficulty levels and boon/bane. It ...

Re: Difficulty, Boon/Bane, and DMs

Referees need to unlearn the bad habit of adding their own +/- DMs to players rolls. I'm not a fan of Bane/Boon pools. Just pick which roll to make (a 2D, a Bane, or a Boon roll). It doesn't help when the rules themselves present some situation modifiers as +/- DMs eg: moving faster or slower, or c...

Re: One Book or Three Plus?

I would argue that a classic Cyberpunk game needs a lot more cyber than just jacks in your head. Eyeware, implanted weapons, specialist vehicle control systems and reaction enhancement all feature in classic cyberpunk literature. The MRB falls short of even the extremely low DNI bar though as the c...

Re: One Book or Three Plus?

I'd have thought all the basics of a cyberpunk were there because of the augments - although it may depend on how you intend to run the cyberpunk game I guess. To me, if you can plug into a computer system with a neural jack you are mostly there. You can certainly play 'high tech, low life' with the...

Re: One Book or Three Plus?

The qualifying phrases don't make good blurb, though. The phrases, as you have already said are true enough - and you don't need any other book other than core to play any type of science fiction game. You don't need equipment, vehicle and spaceship design chapters to make it true.

Re: One Book or Three Plus?

You don't need rules for equipment, vehicle or ship design to play Traveller. The material needed for a specific setting is dependent on the setting. I don't agree that these statements are misleading. I do note your comments on the other thread where you raised this point, using Star Wars examples....

Re: Should Boon/Bane be moved to the Companion?

To be clear, I am not attacking the concept of Boon/Bane. I'm just suggesting that the current implementation is confusing, while the concept could be expanded upon and played around with more as an optional rule in the Companion. In the original playtest, the implication was that a Referee would me...

Re: Should Boon/Bane be moved to the Companion?

Other points for Boon/Bane discussion alongside whether they could be open-ended, would also be whether they could replace Characteristic bonuses. Characteristic Bonuses are a D&Dism in some ways, but in Classic Traveller they are not tabulated and in other versions they don't exist. You could have ...

Re: Should Boon/Bane be moved to the Companion?

For something that is in the core rulebook, that confusion shouldn't exist, and I believe it should be clarified. Agreed. But to be fair, I think they are going in the right direction with the changes in the newest draft. I think the opposite. The implication in the first draft was that the referee...

That is the case as it already is. The Core Rules and the Companion options.

Should Boon/Bane be moved to the Companion?

Now, our group playtested Boon/Bane and enjoyed it's implementation and we appreciate that they weight rolls without affecting the range of effect. However, the question arose as to why we couldn't escalate boon/bane to using more than one dice. I asked the question on a thread below, but the respon...

With regards to the blank page opposite, how about having an example of a character being generated? I'm sure that Alexander Lascelles Jamison can be coaxed out of retirement yet again. ;)
