Through the standard character generation method. The Stats as in Characteristic scores - Strength, Dexterity, etc.

Re: Difficulty, Boon/Bane, and DMs

Well, my plan is to run a new Traveller campaign in the latter half of this year - probably the Pirates of Drinax, or maybe a Mindjammer one - but my plan with Boon/Bane is going to be houseruled a little. My plan is to replace the Stat modifiers with Boon/Bane - so rather than having a scale of DMs...

Re: All Over???

I think the plan is to compile notes, do a bit of last ditch editing, get in some final pieces of art and then get the whole damn project to the printers in time for a March release.

Let's get this ship launched! :)

Re: [[[Playtest Focus]]] Advanced Careers

Sounds a bit like Pretige Classes, or Advanced Careers from Warhammer. I think that you need to first highlight those areas of high advancement that would be something that players would really want to go for - and I'd be thinking more exotic (as with the Psionic careers) than anything else. You're ...

Re: Index in printed books.

Why not include a big index for both the Companion and the Core, inclusive, in the Companion?

Re: [[[Playtest Question]]] Nuclear Weapons

The thermal energy is huge, but one could imagine that a powerful suit could be able to do something to resist it - but nowhere near all. Similarly, the radiation could be resisted but what happens when you take the suit off? The physical blast? Regardless of the strength enhancement of the tank/sui...

Re: Should Boon/Bane be moved to the Companion?

Overall I'm pleased with the direction 2nd is going. Can't wait to get it to the table. Agreed. I'm basically aiming to introduce the Pirates campaign using it next year - having been running the Ancients campaign this whole year (it's nearly done!). The rules are basically sound, notwithstanding s...

Re: Should Boon/Bane be moved to the Companion?

To be fair, I think Matt and co. have probably already decided how to approach Boon/Bane now in terms of the core rules. There may be some development in the Companion though.

Re: [Playtest Update] Revision of the Revision

Cheers!

I had a quick check of the new Leadership entrée into the combat system, which is cool, but you may also want to change the wording in the Leadership skill entrée too - as it now seems contradictory.

I may add some more feedback later, when I've had a full look through.

I had a quick scan through and some of the changes listed (leadership, for example) don't seem to have changed.

Re: Boon/Bane Dice Probabilities

I like the idea of experienced referees using Boon/Bane rolls to make tasks more interesting for players who narrate their actions. Role-players enjoy some uncertainty and interesting outcomes from time to time. If that means role-players then won't narrate their actions, well it just means they we...

Re: Alternatives for Leadership in Combat

I like the ruling, but now the rules are giving out Boons/Banes, so that means the referee can't add another one for any other reason. That did cross my mind and, initially, I was going to make it DMs. However, it will usually be a player handing them out, so it sort of skips past that... Howso? Do...

Re: Difficulty, Boon/Bane, and DMs

The two aspects that are causing confusion - in my group at least - are stacking of Boon/Banes (or the lack thereof) and when 'hardwired DMs' are listed instead of using Boon/Bane. Both seem fairly arbitrary rulings. In the former, the blanket 'only one Boon/Bane may apply' is awkward because it has...

"An alternative mechanic to DMs for handling nebulous factors that can affect the outcome of a task is to use Boon and Bane dice. This involves adding additional dice to the roll and either keeping the best two (boon) or worst two (bane) for the roll total. This has the advantage of affecting the pr...

Re: Difficulty, Boon/Bane, and DMs

The problem is that the application of the boon/bane mechanic is vague and can therefore be confusing for new players and referees. I would leave it out of the core rules, and expand on it as an optional rule in the Companion book. This is broadly a consensus view from feedback though my playing gro...

Re: Difficulty, Boon/Bane, and DMs

DMs determined by players. TNs determined by Referee. Boon/Bane determined by the weather.... I think Trippy isn't really interested in improving Boon/Bane. And is more into creating confusion where there is none. First, understand why a skill check is even being done. Then go from there with the s...
