Re: Future Traveller - Suggestions Appreciated

I rarely get the opportunity to actually PLAY any more, but if I did, what I'd want would be more along the line of the "Player/GM Aide"-ware. I don't want the program to play for me, just to simplify/automate the kinds of things that I'd otherwise spend time flipping through books, note cards, char...

Re: Armoured Starships

Actually it is the exact opposite. A 1 cubic inch box has 4 square inches of surface area. (4:1) surface area:volume An 8 cubic inch box has 24 square inches of surface area. (3:1) Since MGT figures armour by volume of hull, there is thicker armour on larger ships... Can we hear a little bit of "oo...

Re: High Guard "Close Structure"

Maybe it should be renamed, Irregular. Ships that are built of multiple geometric shapes that preclude streamlining? Not necessarily; one image that comes to mind that might legitimately be classed "Close Structure" is the Space-Shuttle-plus-launch-rockets - the big rocket booster with two smaller ...

Re: Comment on the State of the Mongoose

In discussing what role-playing games (a la Traveller, Runequest, D&D, et cetera) are, to those who haven't encountered them before, I generally ask them if they ever played "Let's Pretend" or "Cops and Robbers" or "Cowboys and Indians" when they were kids. Usually, I get an affirmative answer. I th...

Re: On 3D printers in Ship Lockers

I would hold that a shipboard 3D printer is good enough for 'Yeah, I [the engineer] can fab the part, and it'll get us to {mumble} port, but no way in hell can it pass inspection.' {mumble} port can be as much as three jumps away - but putting the fabbed part through the fourth jump is risking a sig...

Re: Comment on the State of the Mongoose

I'm one of those people who actually would like to have BOTH print and PDF on my Traveller collection, simply because I like print for reading and reviewing, and PDF for taking to cons or gaming sessions. For me, Bits and Mortar was the next best thing to a godsend (when I remember to write in for t...

Checking in from Storm Central...

Weathered it well; I still have mostly power, no home net connection, leeching bandpass at work to write this. I haven't made a final decision yet - it's going to depend in part on when I get net back - but I'm leaning toward doing a double issue for December, and skipping November - there's no tell...

Re: unmanned jump ships (Q for GMs)

A number of years ago, I wrote http://www.freelancetraveller.com/featu ... ptune.html to address the perceived problem of jump being a week-long non-event. One of the 'side effects' of the rules presented was that unmanned jumps Just Don't Work.
