Re: Cepheus Engine

I wonder if this will encourage Universal Machine to produce some additional SRD supplements that build on the Cepheus Engine? ;)

Re: EM Drive Result of Experimental Error

It has always been unlikely that the EM Drive was a major technological breakthrough, if only because it seemed to violate a couple of well-established principles. It is likely that further experimental work may be required to validate these preliminary results, but this does seem to find an explana...

Re: Cepheus Engine

Also, keep in mind that certain details about the core careers are explicitly declared as Open Game Content in the T20 books. The implementation in Cepheus isn't exactly the same as in MgT, so it's probably on safe legal ground.

Re: Cepheus Engine

I have OSR books that will not say "D&D" in them. OGL just means soul-less game rules. Only one career is allowed in the generic 2D6. It's like Linux people who end up trying to run Windows on their computers, because Linux. Hey, I'm a Linux user and I don't need no steenkin' Windows! :D However, I...

Re: Cepheus Engine

This was inevitable, given that many third-party publishers are wary of the licensing model used by Mongoose Traveller 2E (which is a pity, because the game itself is decent). It doesn't seem to be a bad clone, filling in the blanks from the Mongoose SRD with material drawn from T20. However, it doe...

Re: New Books, Please?

At the moment we seem to be in a weird holding pattern because all of the available production resources are committed to the new edition of Traveller. That's understandable form a commercial perspective, but it does leave Legend feeling unloved (even though it is still the no 1 bestseller for Mongo...

Re: Hero Points / Improvement Rolls ratio?

Few there I will use, and a few I won't. Must say if the list is too long the players/refs feeble minds can't remember too many of them. Had this in a few games, too many options sends them in to a panic frenzy or paralyses them in thought. We have used a variation of them in our RQ3 for a while an...

Re: Hero Points / Improvement Rolls ratio?

I allow a couple of additional uses for Hero Points: Last Chance Combat Action: If an Adventurer has exhausted his Combat Actions during a fight and needs to find that last burst of desperate energy to perhaps avoid a messy end, he may spend a Hero Point to gain a Combat Action. Second Chance: An Ad...

Re: Hero Points / Improvement Rolls ratio?

I like the way that the Pirates & Dragons book from Cakebread and Walton handles the concept. Their approach to Doubloons (the equivalent to Hero Points) is inspired.

Re: Hero Points / Improvement Rolls ratio?

The number of Hero Points that you hand out can have a significant impact on the feel of your campaign. Hero points provide characters a certain level of "plot immunity", enabling them to survive stuff that would be deadly for regular folks in any realistic setting. If you don't give out many hero p...

Re: Revised Professions

Here's my revised version of the Swords and Sorcery cultural backgrounds for those who would like them balanced against the cultural backgrounds from the Core Rulebook. To some extent, these are based upon my own preferences - some of them have skills marked with an asterisk that were originally pre...

Re: Revised Professions

Not just in fantasy works. You can see it very clearly in the SciFi works of Poul Anderson - his Polestechnic league fell to barbarians and from the ashes arose the Terran Empire, which fell into decay and was crushed which lead to the later rise of the Commonality. It is very Norse... Definitely. ...

Re: Revised Professions

The other cultural types are mostly from Morten's excellent Xoth adventures adapted for Legend a while back. I highly recommend these if you don't already have them. Unfortunately, the adaptations didn't follow the mathematics behind the existing Legend cultural archetypes so I came up with my own v...

Revised Professions

I've been reworking the Legend character creation rules for my campaign and have reworked the Profession list for my own purposes. I plan to release my revised Adventurer Creation system as OGC at some point when I've finished tweaking it, but I thought I'd post the working draft here for feedback. ...

Re: Publish Through the Travellers' Aid Society!

According to drivethrurpg, no you cannot "sell" copies through kickstarter. So you cannot promise copies in exchange for money anywhere except drivethrurpg, if going through this. It's possible that Mongoose might consider some kind of separate licensing agreement for Traveller- related kickstarter...

Re: [GK Games] More Updates!

It is quite true that the OGL is irrevocable. The Community Content Program is also irrevocable. I'm not sure that's true - the FAQ for the Community Content Program implies that publishers retain the rights to any intellectual property that they contribute, but Mongoose retains all rights to their...

Re: [GK Games] More Updates!

I understand that - the sad thing is that DriveThru RPG are locking companies into these Community Content Programs, leveraging their market share to establish a virtual monopoly on entire game systems. The agreement for D&D 5e was the first of these, followed by similar arrangements for Cortex Plus...

Re: [GK Games] More Updates!

I must admit that I'm a bit sad that Mongoose seems to be moving away from the OGL for the Traveller system. Let's hope that whatever they replace it with allows as much third-party activity. In the meantime, I've been reading the updated OGL versions of the GK Games products and I appreciate some o...
