Re: Perception and skills

I’m pretty much where ShawnDriscoll is (although I like the dea of a straight INT check). I tend to require to notice things that are camouflaged or trying to hide like someone shadowing the PCs. Investigate seems better suited not so much for noticing things but putting them in context.

Re: Heightened senses and Investigation

I think this is the sort of situational modifier that falls squarely in the “GM fiat” bucket. For example, enhanced scent might help recognize a suspect’s body odor at a crime scene, pick out the subtle hint of poison from the victim’s last meal, or otherwise detect a faint scent that could be a clu...

Re: Close Combat Maneuvers - suggestions

I like the idea of using a minor action for some of these maneuvers - makes combats a bit more than just rolling dice. What about knocking an opponent off-balance - say, over the railing of a 300th-story balcony? Maybe use the target’s Strength modifier as a DM on the check. You could also consider ...

Re: loans for Speculative Trade?

I think I’d approach this much like traders in the days of sail. Instead of loans, have the PCs round up investors willing to front the cash in return for a share of the profits. Naturally that sets up some tension - investors will likely seek a deal that minimizes their risk while the PCs will want...

Re: Imperial marines and battledress

I’m not so sure. Given the cost differences between battle dress and combat dress (both to purchase and to maintain) it seems likely that battle dress availability would be limited in some way. Ground assault marines wouldn’t leave home without it. Star Marines would likely have it for boarding acti...

Re: Nuts and bolts of the Imperium (gov't - how it works)

I’m more in line with Shawn’s earlier comment about making mountains out of molehills. There’s a lot of great ideas coming up in this thread and if I was running a campaign focused on the nobility I’d be all over them. But for the campaign I’m currently running the actual mechanics of how their fief...

Re: [NewTraveller] Questions: Char Gen Careers and Skills

I believe the second scenario is correct.

Some versions of Traveller did have a grad-school option for extending university time but MGT2 does not. Players who want to do something similar can likely get there by pursuing a Scholar, Citizen or Entertainer career.

The TL14 system at the center of my current campaign was designed much like you’ve described Reynard. Makes a lot of sense and it makes the system far more interesting to visit!

Re: Common Areas vs. Stateroom tonnage

If I remember correctly common area space is added separately in the High Guard rules. Don’t have the rules in front of me but I think there was a recommended minimum allowance. How much depends on the ship’s purpose or mission. Luxury liners should have lots of common area, tramp freighters not so ...

Re: Inaccurate Jumps in Traveller

I think a pirate’s best chance for an interception (short of having a collaborator on board) is simply knowing their prey. For example, a subsidized merchant with a regular route may well target the same volume for entry on the 100D limit (probably whatever gives the ship minimum transit time to the...

Re: DIY advanced tech starship upgrades

[quote=paltrysum post_id=924638 time=1516215065 user_id=377364 I would like the engineering job in Traveller be more than activating the jump drive and fixing things when they get shot, but if you want your game to be realistic, you have to think that without a shipyard and all its tools, the work w...

Re: Sub-Capital Escort Carrier

I was thinking that the electronic warfare transmitted propaganda to the self aware drones. “Don’t listen to those vile animals callously ordering you to your death! Just steer a bit more to the left and we’ll send out something to refuel you just as soon as we’re done here!” Back on topic - so if ...

Wikipedia notes that there is evidence of keas attacking healthy sheep. That’s contributed to their decline as well.

But take away (or modify) that behavior and they might make interesting (if troublesome) pets for Travellers.

Re: Metallic Hydrogen

I would expect the superconductivity and changes in magnetic properties some researchers are theorizing to have an impact on power plant design and fuel storage. Unless we assume it transitions back to gas before going into the fusion chamber.

Instill a self preservation ethic. So the missile thinks “why should I fly towards all that horrible energy discharges when I can go that way and extend my life by billions of nanoseconds?” <just kidding> I like the idea of a specialized control missile but I’m a little wary of taking the concept v...

Re: In-atmosphere speed of manoeuvre drives

Sounds like gas giant skimming brings its own set of limitations. Seems to me that anything designed for that would need to be designed for super/hypersonic flight consequences. However, would this also limit some skimming ships to smaller gas giants (less G forces, less dense atmosphere, etc.)? Sk...

Re: Inaccurate Jumps in Traveller

Now that you’ve got me thinking about this - maybe the die progression for the error should follow a power-law assumption. For example, a marginal result leads to 1D error, a -1 Effect is a 2D (2^1) error, -2 Effect = 4D error (2^2), -3 Effect = 8D error, etc. (This works better if it’s in a table r...
