I take it the Longbow in RQ is then an ancient longbow, and not a late medieval English longbow then? Because I seriously doubt a sling could ruin French Knights as the Longbows did at Agincourt. I don't think longbows changed much. The English longbows had a very low chance of harming a knight in ...

Composite repost from that thread: Slings were the most effective ranged weapon, man for man, until the advent of the flintlock musket. Launch speeds up to 80 m/s (compare with a bow in the 60-70m/s mark) combined with much lower air resistance and greater mass (in the case of lead bullets, vastly g...

I want to take the 'every myth is correct' approach, but I'm not sure of the implications. If I have historical pantheons, like Greek, Norse, Celtic, etc, is is possible that they are all 'correct'? Your problem there is not so much myths as cosmologies. You can handwave the myths by giving the god...

And, you're describing what YOU WOULD DO if you were in charge of the Hyborian Age. Oh, the irony... you have at least noticed Valeria now i see! Don't speculate on real world history. Look at how Howard described the Hyborian Age in his stories. What an excellent idea Evidently Conan supposed Yasm...

Therein lies our problem. The answer is "Very Rare" no matter where you are in the Hyborian Age, whether women fight with their men or not, because we are talking about a woman that is a challenge for a strong male fighter in Howard's Hyborian Age. S4, you don't get to make these magesterial basele...

Hmm. I would say "Rare". It would be locational though. Taking a strong male fighter (Conan complicates the question by being formidable enough that at least late in his career meeting anyone or anything strong enough to challenge him without superior numbers is Very Rare) I would say that in Cimmer...

You're not that dumb, are you, to think that we (before you entered and took over the conversation) were talking in generalities. Its an open thread, on a public messageboard. If you want privacy, thats what the messages are for. We were talking about women in Howard's Hyborian Age. Then you come a...

The difference here being that 14th century knights are in no way close to Mongolia... The mongols were only close to Europe in a very short time span (from around 1250 to 1280 when they were beaten back again and stuck to asia. Which actually is not the 14th century), The Mongols are only one trib...

Sure they fight. So do the Cimmerian children. But neither is in the class of a male Cimmerian warrior. That's the point. Cimmerian (and "barbarian") women routinely strap on armour and weapons and go to war (as Pictish women did). That's what we know. That bit about not being in the class of male ...

But my original point was the lack of any apparent direction in the art in the Gloranthan book. It appears to be a fairly random collection of images based on anything from the last 2500 years or so of real world history. After reading the book I am none the wiser as to what Glorantha looks like. A...

No matter how you go about it, there are not a lot of women--Velaria is the only one I can think of--in Howard's writings of the Hyborian Age that can compete with men on the battlefield. Amalric twisted his yellow mustache to hide a grin. Evidently Conan supposed Yasmela intended to strap on a swo...

Up to a point - but remind me, when did hoplites (p88) co-exist with fully armoured knights (p 194)? c1100 - 1450. Performance was variable, but the knights got their asses kicked at Courtrai (1302) for example. Scottish schiltrons looked not unlike that picture either. After 1450 they tended to ge...

I also think the art needs to be more consistently themed - even after going through the Glorantha core book, I don't have a clear picture of what Glorantha (or any of its parts) really look like. Some of the illustrations make it look "ancient" some "medieval" and one or two look positively "moder...

The myths are truly amazing stuff. The idea that cultures don't subscribe to a universal truth is insightful. This is what makes Glorantha special. Technically, they do subscribe to a universal truth: its just that there's more than one. Total bastards who go around plundering cultures/myths for wh...

I don't think that it does, but it's not like we need to agree on this The statement "In Howard's writings, there are no women that can compete with men physically" is false: there are several. Even the statement "In Howard's Hyborian Age writings, there are no women that can compete with men physi...

No, because the context of the post you took that quote from obviously referred to Howard's writings of the Hyborian Age A complaint you didnt make when Boneguard talked about Sonya and Dark Agnes in the next post... It doesn't matter. Valeria fights, Cimmerian women fight. That makes the point jus...

I don't realy get the Ducks = cute race thing. That's not how they are atualy presented at all.
But they are. I agree the backstory for them is as you have said, but when they actually show up in scenarios they are usually comic relief.

Only one applies, though. Valeria. Red Sonya is not a Howard character form the Hyborian Age What you said was: In Howard's writings, there are no women that can compete with men physically Red Sonya applies. Also we have no information about Belit one way or the other. We never see her in a situat...

Despite it's were-creature (cursed humans), Man-Ape (Devolved humans btw), Vampire and mummies (undead human) and Atali (A Goddess who appears in dream) as well as her Frost giant brothers, we can still consider Hyboria to be Humanocentric, because while real, these monster are originally from huma...

One of the cool things about Howard's Hyborean Age vs standard fantasy trope is that it is VERY humanocentric. There are no fantasy races Queen of the Black Coast Cast in the mold of humanity, they were distinctly not men. They were winged and of heroic proportions; not a branch on the mysterious s...
