I love the Ford Mustang. I currently have a '96, and before that I had an '81. I never had a "classic" Mustang. Yet their new Mustangs are marketed as having that "classic" feel with "classic" lines. Was Ford trying to target people who owned pre-'79 Mustangs? I doubt it. Don't you think that if th...

Of course you can. It is done every day by many companies in our economy. Its called marketing. Well, I didn't want to come right out and say that, as I have been trying to give them the benefit of the doubt. Probably the best way to describe Mongoose's is 'opportunisic' (which has both good and ba...

Re: New XP system = class system in disguise?

It could have been reasonably argued that the RQ3 Previous Experience system was a class system in disguise also. As are the backgrounds from Call of Cthulhu. Of course, no skills really matter for CoC... GM : Okay, Great Cthulhu picks you all up in his tentacles P.I. : I try to shoot him with my r...

Could you elaborate more? What changes from BRP have been improved for you?

In an RPGnet thread, Matt stated that they knew they were going to have problems with what they called the "Old Guard"; long-time fans of Glorantha and the three original RQ releases. He said this release wasn't really "for" them, but to capture new RQ fans and expose new people to RQ and Glorantha...

Re: New XP system = class system in disguise?

I just don't think it was some sneaky effort to build classes into MRQ, is all. I wasn't implying it was sneaky, just a consequence of the new system (especially as applied over a long campaign). I am not opposed to character classes, although I think the are more geared to a dungeon-crawl type of ...

New XP system = class system in disguise?

One of the things that set RQ apart from AD&D was the lack of character classes -- you had sort of jack-of-all-trades characters that were essentially 'adventurers' with a later possible specialization in combat (Rune Lord) or magic (Rune Priest). MQ with it's 2-3 skill checks xp awards and low star...

Edited for correct quotation -- sorry Rurik! Infact, I'd "backflow" [Rune integration] into RQ2/3 and even HW/HQ I like it so much! This is a feature I wouldn't bring forward into the Third Age, but is a nice thing to set the Second Age apart. I wonder if the Runes will be part of the Second Age bo...

Re: Centipedes of Doom?

basically unless you are lucky or use precise strikes it will always be more dangerous to fight creatures with large numbers of target locations. While I haven't analyzed it, I suspect the same may be true of heavily armored foes -- since Crits don't ignore armor (you need a precise strike for that...

I was a big RQ fan, like many of us. When I found out Mongoose was going to release a new version, I was ecstatic, and placed a pre-order for the first three books that very day. I did the same thing, although my enthusiasm has waned. <asbestos> At this point, I'd probably recommend people that alr...

I sympathize fully with Mongoose Matt in wondering why anyone would think they would publish a broken game. Didn't one of the math guys (bluejay?) prove that the halving rule was borked for opposed skill rolls? Or was that just an artifact of the general mis-information that flew around the last we...

Though, as has been pointed out elsewhere on this forum, skill levels over 100% become pretty meaningless then. While I was never a huge fan of Special success from RQ3, but having every 4 skill points have a game effect is a lot more significant than every 10 points. I guess the point is to get to...

My pleasure guys. Now what can I do for a follow-up...? Thanks for all your work on this! Hrm.. a follow-up... If you're really ambitious, you can can add weapon damage and AP. I would be interesting to compare the damage output vs. absorbsion on items like two-handed sword vs. sword and shield vs....

The only thing you should 100% avoid doing is putting stuff in a printed fanzine that charges for distribution (even just to cover printing costs), or a website that charges you to access it (even just to cover bandwidth). Either give it away at the authors expense as their contribution to the hobb...

As for other Gloranthan beings, yes, there is magic to help the farmer raise crops, the smith to fashion metal, and so on - however, this is all pretty low grade stuff and while there is no reason for adventurers not to use it, it won't be of prime interest to them. The was a really great old-schoo...

Re: I have the core rules

What is in the Companion that is essential? ie that you feel is missing from the main rules? I suspect he may be referring to some of the more Gloranthan mechanics, especially Cults and Divine Magic, which IIRC, are in the MQ Companion. The book just doesn't give me that runequest feel I have with ...

Skills over 100 are still valuable because of the called shots. A skill of 140% can bypass armor every time (or use any of the other called shots.... Which is fine by me, the called shots are very potent. Can you explain how Called Shots work? And how they would interact with a highly skilled oppon...

I don't think fanzines will be an issue. TIghten the reins too much and the only people playing the game will be the ones with persmission to write for it. I think that the liscensing issue is only going to be enfirced for commercial products. I doubt they are going to go chasing down a fanzine of ...
