Re: Do you allow psionics?

What determines a person's psi strength? (Other than a die roll, I mean.) At a guess genetics, like any other characteristic. Education and Social Standing aren't due to genetics. Psi isn't a definable characteristic in any case as it's fictional. The paradigm offered in the OTU is that everybody h...

Re: Do you allow psionics?

For me, I don't think the issue is about Psionics per se, but I baulk against lazy, hand wavy sci-fi. Just saying 'the power of the mind' as a reason for having magical powers isn't enough and it takes away from the verisimilitude of the setting (including the OTU) a bit. I prefer a bit more paradig...

Re: Core Book Index in Traveller Companion?

So, I'm talking about a really good index - that spans all the core books as a useful tool. Possibly akin to the indexes used in GURPS, for example. Could also be an index released as a stand alone PDF. Possibly quite useful in itself - especially if free. I am a completist, however, so including i...

Re: Core Book Index in Traveller Companion?

Well, that's one opinion of somebody who doesn't like to use an index (in any reference book!?).

Is there anybody who does make use of indexes in reference books have any opinion?

Core Book Index in Traveller Companion?

One common complaint from fans, myself included, is that there is no Index in any of the Traveller 2nd Edition line to date. It does, I have to say, make some rules referencing difficult from books during gameplay. With the production of all four core books done, and their still apparently being som...

Re: Do you allow psionics?

I allow psionic in OTU because it's part of the setting - but I have disappointed players before when they have been given permission to play a Psychic (as in a character choice, not just because of a random roll) and have ended up getting a mini-mortgage to pay off for the training. To me, that poi...

Re: How do you handle time travel?

If you go and watch the recent Arrival movie there is, at it's heart, a philosophical rationale for time travel as expressed through the alien language. There is also a philosophical rationale in Interstellar too, to an extent. These are pretty much hard sci-fi movies. I think the key to time travel...

Re: does Traveller 2E not include aliens?

I think the Companion is proving to be the trickiest of Traveller supplements, from what it appears. Maybe they should return to the idea of making an indefinite series of Compendiums instead? Anyway, I'd like to see all the Major Races detailed in some fashion, along with Robots and A.I. to make a ...

SF $10 for the PDf vs $29.99 for the 2E PDF
SF $59.99 for the hard copy vs $49.99 for the 2E hard copy
SF has something very novel called an 'index'
SF 532 pages vs 241 pages

Just saying....
I couldn't give a **** about any of that though. Just saying'.

Re: New Paizo SF RPG: Competitor with Traveller?

It'll around for about three years, then fizzle out. It's really a case of Paizo trying to find ways of keeping Pathfinder in the mind of fans, but I don't really see it as a game changer.

Re: Mongoose News - The Pirates of Drinax

Just to say, I was considering just getting this as a PDF - I tend to find adventures expendable as once you've run them, they just collect dust and pdfs are easier to print out handouts, etc. However, once I saw the mooted packaging of the set, it quickly changed my mind. Point to say, the quality ...

Re: Point-buy like in Mindjammer for Traveller

As a default these days, I tend towards the 'Roll 12 dice at once and distribute how you like' towards Characteristic generation. You could also set a cap here for a minimum total, to ward off very bad roll. It's still technically random, but it still gives players a point-spend-like influence on ho...

Re: 2300AD - Standalone RPG?

I just see Traveller: 2300AD (which is actually what the label will say, regardless of marketing issues suffered in the 80s, as it will be based on the Traveller system) will make an alternate, hard sci-fi/near future alternative entree into Traveller. It could be used as just an alternate setting f...

Re: Hard Scifi. What is it and why Traveller is Hard Scifi

Traveller, from the very origins of the game, sort to apply scientific ideas towards it's game design. When you have space travel considering the notion of displacement tonnage and calculated formula it's a pretty good way to get people thinking scientifically. The aliens are described by ecological...

I have preordered it, although I'm unsure about the late pdf release thing. Generally, I think the pdf should come out the same time as the preorder - at least it would avoid confusion.

Re: New to Traveller? What Career to Choose

Well, what sort of game play are you after? If you are coming from D&D, the comparisons between Classes/Careers don't quite fit as there aren't magic users in the game. However, Barbarians - Drifters Bards - Entertainers, Merchants (sort of) Clerics/Healers - Scholars (Physicians) Fighters - Marines...
