Re: Low tech ships - Need help

I'm avoiding using fission as a power source for these ships. I'm declaring that radioactives are quite rare. If I did otherwise, then chemical power plants would serve no purpose. Fission is better in all ways. Likewise, TL 7 M-0 drives aren't available as artificial gravity hasn't been invented ye...

Re: Low tech ships - Need help

Should a ship have engineers for solar panels? I've been finding solar panels are a must have for TL 7 ships. Chemical power plants require too much space for fuel. To keep fuel within reason, I've been reducing the fuel until it will last a day or so. Chemical fuel (as set forth in High Guard) will...

Re: Low tech ships - Need help

I've been thinking about making up a scenario for these ships. Since there is no jump at TL 7, I'm thinking that maybe there should be a solar system with 2 worlds. These two TL 7 worlds could be at war or otherwise not friendly with each other. That scenario could see some TL 7 ship battles. Anyway...

Re: Low tech ships - Need help

Well, I think I'm done with the TL 7 Class C starport. It is 75,000 ton station that meets the qualifications for a Class C starport in all ways except sensors and M-drive. Sensors is a still a problem as TL 7 doesn't allow for even the most basic of sensors. It has no no reaction drive because ther...

Re: Low tech ships - Need help

You can use the Primitive and Advanced Spacecraft option prototype to bring in more advanced weapons. I'm trying to stick to TL 7 or lower whenever possible. So I'll be using stuff like chemical power plants, even if TL 8 fusion is right around the corner. Not released yet, but you'll see it on Dri...

Which book can I find this ship in? Bonus points if you can get me a link.

Low tech ships - Need help

For fun, I decided to try to design a few low tech ships. I found that I could go as low as TL 7 on many of the steps, but I've ran into problems. Low tech weapons. The only weapons I see at TL 7 are missiles and torpedoes. I'm hoping for more variety, such as firearm ships weapons. I'm trying to av...

Re: Removing Hardpoint Limits: Necessity or Heresy?

I'm going to play devils advocate. Many of the sample ships in Highguard don't use up all the hard points they are allowed to have (I'm going figure out the exact numbers). The Dreadnaught Tigress class (the largest ship in the book, it is 500,000 tons) doesn't even use up half of its hard points. O...

Re: size and price of advanced components

I can testify that the costs are based upon current tonnage. I analyzed all the ships a while back, and current tonnage was the only that the numbers lined up correctly.

Re: Missing Stateroom space

There are some good things that HG2 has done, but this is not one of them. IMHO this is one huge screw up. It really didn't change. Staterooms are still usually 3 tons as they where in the earlier edition as far as size on the deck plans goes. You're paying for the 3 tons of stateroom then included...

Re: Questions: Spinal Mounts

Yeah. This strategy really favors the one on the offensive. Your homeworld is not a place you want to leave undefended. Its a lose-lose that results in your homeworld being undefended. I'm trying to consider other counters. One idea is remembering the fact that using nukes near inhabited worlds is c...

Re: MgT HG 2e Jump Filters

I still stand by my argument. I've read the whole thing before posting here. The device itself may include other stuff, but its role is a sensor augment. I think it is more sensible to keep it with the sensors and other sensor augments. To be blunt, if I thought it didn't belong with the other senso...

Re: Questions: Spinal Mounts

The dscription is in HG2e page 5. More precisely, a battlerider is a system ship. I forgot about those early pages. I'll go read them again. Good information to know if you like designing ships. Anyways. Is there anything I can do to make combat more personal and less missile blips on the radar? I ...

Re: MgT HG 2e Jump Filters

I would keep it with the sensor stuff. I think its a sensor thing and should be kept with other sensor stuff. Synchronised Jumps (HG 2e p. 14) says you can do synchronized jumps, but it requires another +5 bandwidth. I don't see that written down for the details of any ship, so I don't think you hav...

Re: Questions: Spinal Mounts

Ah, TL10, that is J-1, basically a battle rider, they are a bit iffy. It's different at TL11+. Battle rider. Whats that? I'm not that familiar with Traveller lore. With only Short range and only laser turrets for defence you are very vulnerable to missiles... Instead of the spinal you could have 50...

Re: Curing the plague

I believe that Book 10 Cosmopolite (1e) covered what you are looking for. It used their research rules and did a plague as one of their examples.

I did a quick check. Research rules start on p. 64 . The specific example, "THE CHOBRAN PLAGUE", is found on p. 70 .

Re: MgT HG 2e Crew for Back-up JD, MD, PP, etc.

I suddenly have a question. What happens if you are understaffed? Engineering, maintenance, or other crew roles? I'm talking big ships where they might otherwise have hundreds or thousands of crew.

Re: MgT HG 2e Crew for Back-up JD, MD, PP, etc.

I think the crew numbers are recommendations. The basic questions you should be asking are: how much stress (like combat or general danger) is your vessel expected to be in and how much crew does it take to make sure the vessel performs well in those situations. I don't think your backup systems nee...

Re: Is Jump Control Software basically autopilot?

I think all of the sample ships in Highguard 2e have the jump control software appropriate for their jump drive. I'm not really sure if was a good idea for jump software to have a cost. The cost for jump software tends to be small in comparison to the full costs of the vessels that can use them. I k...

Re: Is Jump Control Software basically autopilot?

No. Jump control software is not autopilot. Jump control software enables a ship to jump. A ship that doesn't have such software can't jump. It don't matter what the astrogator or engineer's skills are, if you don't have the right tools you can't do the job. If you want autopilot, try intellect soft...
