Re: Gauss Weapons System - Feedback?

I wanted to keep the muzzle velocity sub-sonic to keep the weapon silent, but it would be dialed up for certain ammo types, the APDS comes to mind. Re: Suggested prices or their equivalent?

I like these blanket ideas from nowhere that you post. "I have this cool idea for a movie, with lots of mega-space stuff everywhere going on in it. Write me a script please." The answer for your ship price: MCr 500,000. I am amused and confused by the oddly specific numbers for things. 94% of this,...

Re: Mongoose Traveller cross compatibility and immortality

I'm mainly worried about the character creation, ending up at potentially 50-60 terms being rolled for, not skill totals or anything. High skill totals can be mitigated (either through limited skill ranks or more difficult tasks). That's why I'm considering going for a set point buy total (leaning ...

Re: Alternative approach to skill and characteristic advancement

I like it. although I think the stat advancement is a little too fast, especially given how expensive it is to advance skills. Maybe doubling the listed cost to advance stats? maybe 2x+2 (moving from 5 to 6 would cost (2x5)+2, or 12 points?

Gauss Weapons System - Feedback?

Applying Gauss weapon technologies to essentially an Auto-Shotgun, I've come up with this. It should handle like an auto-shotgun, and give performance sort of like a light grenade launcher. This model is a little expensive with an integrated gyro-stabilizer, holographic sight. The thought is that ea...

Re: Wealth and Tech Availabilty

Can I point out that The Spaceport is own operated build and supported by the imperium not the planet. Think of the Spaceport as the imperial embassy only a couple of square miles in sizes. The tech level of the Spaceport is determined by its classification A 15-14, B 13-12, C 11-10 and so on. Ther...

Re: Gauss Weapons - Zero-G?

[ . . . ] A problem with using DU rounds, is that the dust created by DU fragmenting and burning, creates a radioactive toxin that lingers in the environment for a while. I'm guessing that most local governments, even if low law level, would be pretty frowny on people using DU rounds, as likely wou...

Re: Gauss Weapons - Zero-G?

Depleted Uranium isn't ferromagnetic, so you couldn't launch a round "made" of DU with a Gauss weapon, but you could use DU as the core with a soft outer casing. ... Re: Gauss Weapons - Zero-G?

Ye default shotgun fires off an eighteen millimetre shell; this might be a tad too large to stuff into a standard gauss rifle. In an atmosphere, the gauss bullet does have to be aerodynamic, and have enough penetrative power to punch through personal armour, and deliver substantial energy to the ta...

Re: Gauss Weapons - Zero-G?

There's also the matter of stabilizing a round. Fitting four grams of anything into a 4 mm diameter round gives a long stick of matter. Wolfram and DU has a density of ~19 g/cm³, so 4 g would be 4/19 ≈ 0.21 cm³ = 210 mm³. A 4 mm diameter projectile has a cross-section of π2² ≈ 12.5 mm². At 210 mm³ ...

Re: Gauss Weapons - Zero-G?

Most of the things that I could add here have been covered. One point to emphasize about recoil is the muzzle energy is mass times velocity squared, while momentum is mass times velocity, so the 4 gram 1500 meter per second Gauss round has a lower momentum than a heavy normal velocity round of equa...

Re: Cheap Colonial Hauler for Paltrysum

Paltrysum made mention of a desire for a cheap throwaway colony ship to move people from Albe to Cordillon in the thread on Solar Panels. I thought that was a cool idea. Here is my quick and dirty offf the cuff design to make a cheap system for moving lots of people. It uses Fast Drug as a means of...

Re: Gauss Weapons - Zero-G?

It's implied it's a slug, but a gauss bullet could be a fletchette to ensure stability. It's basically the Vietnam era M193 ball bullet, as described in the original Mercenary. Mercenary says: "Gauss Rifle: The ultimate development of the slug thrower, the gauss rifle generates an electromagnetic f...

Re: Gauss Weapons - Zero-G?

Not convinced that a real-world gauss weapon would create virtually no heat. Even if the coils are super-conducting (almost certain) other components in the system probably won’t be and the cycling of the intense magnetic fields involved in those parts will generate heat. The air inside will heat u...

Re: Gauss Weapons - Zero-G?

You have to shrink the warhead to four milliemtres from ten. Unless you use a larger, slower round. I probably have read too much "Stainless Steel Rat". I like all flavors of Gauss weapons, and big Recoilless Pistols. :D It seems reasonable that you could scale a "Gauss" weapon up to a sizeable bor...

Re: Monetizing the Arts

This has actually come up in my game. Initially I just handled it as a Trade (eg 100cr a month). It's easy and won't really impact your game either way, but I thought it lacked a certain fun about the wild and wacky world of art. So I made the system below. The gist of it is to handle art as kind o...

Monetizing the Arts

Characters with Art skills, Writing, Singing, Musical Instrument, Sculpture, etc should be able to monetize their skill by performing their art.

Any thoughts on how to manage that? I've been monkeying with it for a while, but can't come up with anything I'm happy with.

why couldn't you use the collector, generally, but have enough fuel for a jump 1 as backup? that way you can get out of dodge in a hurry if you need to do so.

Re: Gauss Weapons - Zero-G?

Recoil, if you think of the gauss weapon as "throwing" the rounds down range, rather than trying to wrap your head around pushing, or pulling the round, it might be simpler to visualize. as several people have indicated, force is being exerted, and produces recoil. On a larger weapon, I don't know w...
