Re: Gauss Weapons - Zero-G?

Most of the things that I could add here have been covered. One point to emphasize about recoil is the muzzle energy is mass times velocity squared, while momentum is mass times velocity, so the 4 gram 1500 meter per second Gauss round has a lower momentum than a heavy normal velocity round of equa...

Re: Cheap Colonial Hauler for Paltrysum

Paltrysum made mention of a desire for a cheap throwaway colony ship to move people from Albe to Cordillon in the thread on Solar Panels. I thought that was a cool idea. Here is my quick and dirty offf the cuff design to make a cheap system for moving lots of people. It uses Fast Drug as a means of...

Re: Gauss Weapons - Zero-G?

It's implied it's a slug, but a gauss bullet could be a fletchette to ensure stability. It's basically the Vietnam era M193 ball bullet, as described in the original Mercenary. Mercenary says: "Gauss Rifle: The ultimate development of the slug thrower, the gauss rifle generates an electromagnetic f...

Re: Gauss Weapons - Zero-G?

Not convinced that a real-world gauss weapon would create virtually no heat. Even if the coils are super-conducting (almost certain) other components in the system probably won’t be and the cycling of the intense magnetic fields involved in those parts will generate heat. The air inside will heat u...

Re: Gauss Weapons - Zero-G?

You have to shrink the warhead to four milliemtres from ten. Unless you use a larger, slower round. I probably have read too much "Stainless Steel Rat". I like all flavors of Gauss weapons, and big Recoilless Pistols. :D It seems reasonable that you could scale a "Gauss" weapon up to a sizeable bor...

Re: Monetizing the Arts

This has actually come up in my game. Initially I just handled it as a Trade (eg 100cr a month). It's easy and won't really impact your game either way, but I thought it lacked a certain fun about the wild and wacky world of art. So I made the system below. The gist of it is to handle art as kind o...

Monetizing the Arts

Characters with Art skills, Writing, Singing, Musical Instrument, Sculpture, etc should be able to monetize their skill by performing their art.

Any thoughts on how to manage that? I've been monkeying with it for a while, but can't come up with anything I'm happy with.

Re: Collector Based Armstrong Ship

why couldn't you use the collector, generally, but have enough fuel for a jump 1 as backup? that way you can get out of dodge in a hurry if you need to do so.

Re: Gauss Weapons - Zero-G?

Recoil, if you think of the gauss weapon as "throwing" the rounds down range, rather than trying to wrap your head around pushing, or pulling the round, it might be simpler to visualize. as several people have indicated, force is being exerted, and produces recoil. On a larger weapon, I don't know w...
