Best sourcebooks on the Imperium

I'm looking for more information on the Third Imperium, particularly the workings of the Imperial government and military, the interplay of Imperial and local laws, relations with and between member worlds, and day-to-day life. What titles should I be looking for?

Re: The Drifter's Guide to the Galaxy

Pretty cheap for an automatic Boon.... Would DM+1 make more sense? Mathematically, a boon is equivalent to DM+2; both push the peak of the bell curve from 7 to 9. I mostly wrote this as a joke, but I would like it to be at least somewhat balanced. Raw data shouldn't give you streetwise rolls becaus...

The Drifter's Guide to the Galaxy

The Drifter's Guide to the Galaxy is a wholly remarkable work, containing contributions from countless numbers of Travellers and researchers. Part encyclopedia, part travel guide, the Guide contains comprehensive information on every system and world in Charted Space. Available in every Imperial sta...

The idea is to become a Traveller at some point. Not stay in a career.
You don't think the aging roll is enough to discourage overlong pre-campaign careers?

Career qualification modifiers

I can't see the unifying logic behind them. The standard "DM-1 for each previous career" seems needlessly punitive to me, and the fact that there are no positive modifiers just doesn't make sense. Merchant captains and the IISS should jump at an applicant with prior naval experience, for example.

Conscious Intelligence and Virtual Crew

If a ship's computer is running a Conscious Intelligence, does it still need Virtual Crew software to be able to operate the ship's systems?

Dudes. I love a good math argument as much as the next geek, but can we get a dev in here with an official answer, please?

Re: Ship design - am I doing it right?

R-drives only use fuel efficiency modifications, streamlining only applies to atmospheric flight and provides a built-in fuel scoop. http://forum.mongoosepublishing.com/viewtopic.php?f=89&t=120613 Others disagree about advantage applicability, and frankly I see no reason why a higher tech level sho...

Ship design - am I doing it right?

I'm going through the ship-design process in High Guard to make sure I understand it. Tech Level The Rainbow Dash is a racing sloop, either a nobleman's toy or sponsored racer in a professional league. She's being built at a TL15 shipyard, but most of the critical components will be TL12 to take adv...

Combining hull options

If I want to design a ship with a light (-25% cost), streamlined (+20% cost) hull, what's the order of operations? Do I just add the modifiers for a net -5% cost?

Education and Social Standing aren't due to genetics.
On a side note, I kind of wish Social Standing had a more indicative name; Social Aptitude, maybe. If I understand it correctly, the attribute isn't actually related to your place in society, but the character's ability to socialize.

Re: Do you allow psionics?

That really bugs me. If there's no physical difference between psions and non-psions (blanks? neutrals?), then why isn't everyone a psion? It raises more questions than it answers. :P Everyone is a psion, not everyone is trained. Note that you can't fail a test for psionic potential, you can only g...

High Guard: High tech advantages

Is it kosher to apply an advantage to a component, even if it's not explicitly listed? For instance, the only advantage listed for reaction drives is "Fuel Efficient;" could I also apply the maneuver drive advantage "Size Reduction," representing improved miniaturization at the higher tech level?

Re: Do you allow psionics?

Seemingly ridiculous or not, psionics are part of the OTU. Perhaps they were unleashed by early genetic engineering efforts before the Long Night and worked their way, however minimally, into the gene pool. Assuming you want to stick with Marc Miller's "canon" for psionic powers in T4 it is pointed...

Re: Precursor civilizations, ultratech, and Big Dumb Object stories

I'm more than a little surprised that a place like Northstar only has a class D starport. I'm also surprised that there's apparently only one starport. Is there an official explanation for why a supposedly "high technology" system has such limited facilities?

Precursor civilizations, ultratech, and Big Dumb Object stories

I'm a sucker for a good BDO. Ringworld is one of my all-time favorite novels. Ancient civilizations and sufficiently advanced technology also tickle my fancy. Is there any material on these topics for the 3I setting, or am I (gloriously) on my own to come up with this sort of thing?

Re: Fuel per jump

So the 100 ton ship with a jump 2 drive (TL11) needs 5 percent of the ships tonnage in jump drive (so 5 tons) plus 5 tons of drive, for 10 total tons of Jump drive. (described on page 15). I'm not following this part. On p.15 of High Guard, it says jump drives must be a minimum of 10 tons. A 100-to...

Fuel per jump

I'm going through the ship-design process in High Guard to make sure I understand it, and I've got a question about jump fuel. The book says: The fuel tankage needed for a jump drive is related to the size of the ship and the length of the jump, as follows; 10% of the total tonnage of the ship, mult...

Do you allow psionics?

I don't like mixing fantasy with my sci-fi, unless it's vital to the plot. Yes, I know things like FTL and such are basically fantasy in different clothes. I'm OK with the Force in Star Wars, because Star Wars almost entirely about the conflict between the Jedi and Sith. I quite like White Wolf's Tr...

Re: Character creation - am I doing it right?

In the "Military Academy" section on p.15, it says, "Skills: Gain all Service Skills of the military career the academy is tied to at level 0, as with basic training." I took that to mean that basic training is part of the academy curriculum.
